Masterlink or peening tool?
Gimme your suggestions on fastening your chain.
Do you use safety wire?
Endless link?

Are you saying that you have a chain that uses a "CLIP" on the Masterlink? All of the Masterlinks I have use the rivet tool on the masterlink!! I use a cut off wheel on a Dremel tool to remove them!

Most of the o-ring chains that I've seen use the rivet-style masterlinks, and the non-o-ring chains that I've seen tend to lean toward the clip-style. I use an EK DRZ chain with the clip-style masterlink because there may be days at the dragstrip when I may want to go up a tooth in the back when the conditions warrant it. I just use some silicone on the clip to make me feel better.

That thing about silicone! PLEAZE! Just what would it do if the load was placed on it? When I used clips, I safety wired them with a strong piced of stainless aircraft wire!

How do you safety a master link clip?

The silicone is to keep the lock in place. The side plade actually take the load. If the lock is in place the side plate can't come off, no load on
the silicone. Never had a problem except getting it off.

Right in the Middle of the link. and do the twirling on the side of the plate and cut it short and push it backward. It toches nothing and really hangs in there!
If your side plates are straight, then you cannot ise this method because the wire can then slide as opposed to a plate with a waist!

SorryMr Hill, still not 100% on this safety thing. Does the wire go around the sideplate and the clip or is it installed between the clip and the side plate.
Thanks

i believe the safety wire replaces the lock on a clip type master link
which has the grooves in place to hold the wire/lock.
outside the sideplate.

That is correct! Alound the "Plate" and the Clip! It then holds them both in place!
No I would not suggest using the safety wire as a "Replacement" for the clip! Also please notethat if the side plates are straight in the edges (No curves in the middle of the plate), this cannot be used because the wire and move and bind the link!

Maybe I will do it for grins on my wife's 250 Ninja. On my 12, I have the tool and rivet the masterlink!

alright, I must be a real idiot here.
the load is north/south even when cornering, on or off the gas.
The locking clip shouldn't take much load at all, thus making the silicone thing just that added slight security, right?? {{{scratching head}}}

BA, in theory, you are correct! WIth Perfect alignment 100% flat teeth on the sprockets and 0 tolerance in the slide play from perfect spacing on the rollers in the chain! The problem is, the chain runs with some angle to the sprockets. The play in the rollers and the edges of the sprockets hitting the rollers put side pressure on the side plates. at high speed, the hitting of the rollers and the vibration on the side plates that are not rivited will eventually knock the clip off! The newer the chain and sprockets and better the chain sprocket alignment, the less chance of this happening!

now that looks awsome!!! the only thing that scares me is I put colored silicone over the link, and it kind of helps me see if the clip is gone or at least if the silicone is gone!
I guess I could do the same.

Vince i like your safety wire, BUT i don't see what it does that silicone wont. You mentioned side loads, I can't see why that way would increase the side load capacity since the lock would have to be pulled thru either way. I have never seen a lock pulled thru only thrown off , usually from improper installation or no silicone. I don't doubt that there is less chance of the lock being thrown off, but silicone works very well for many.
Not a challenage, but if you know something i don't.
