zx12r gearing
Ive been running my 12 with 16/47 gears @9.80 146mph. im close to 200lbs and hearing guys talking of mid 9s. i saw a post claiming 16/44 this seems tall for drag racing. any suggestions? bike is stock with muzzy pipe. it is lowered also.i tried 16/48 but couldnt keep front down. just wondering if anyone has found a better combination that they are willing to share. thanks

first I would like to say that you should run the gearing that YOU need, not necessarily that everyone else is using, ya know? (you probably know that)
I think you're in 5th gear through the traps...seriously.
I run the 16/44, which is essentially the same as a 17/46 but you get a slightly longer wheelbase out of it. I cross the traps at the rev-limiter area depending upon which tire I am using, and I'm usually around the 149 or 150 mph mark. 4th gear.
For you to have the +3T extra, crossing at almost the same mph, you must be in 5th.
BTW, I'm light at around 150 suited up.
If you are crossing the traps near the redline, then your gearing is correct for you.

I run the same gearing as you. I weigh 230 lb in leathers. My 60ft 1.6 my best run is 9.95@142 mph at a mile high track. My bike is slammed, stretched 3 1/2 to 4 inchs, shinko tire and foot shifted. You were saying 16-48 was causing the bike to wheelie to much. Are you slammed and stretched? I to am crossing the line at the top of 4th(with a little bit of rpm left). I was thinking that the 16-48 might be just perfect without going into 5th. Good luck!!

im as low as i can get video tape shows a hair under body on launch. Iam at stock wheelbase. i turn shift light on at top of 4th at the line. best 60 ft is 1.56 9.801 146mph. i used a mt tire on that pass. on d208 tire i have run 1.59s 9.83s at 144mph. so i can guess im as close as i will get with stock motor and gearing. just looking for that little bit more we racers all look for!! thanks for all your replies!!!!

That seems kinda strange. Mine would go 9.6s at around 145 with 60's in the low 1.6s. Maybe you're not getting wide open quick enough in first gear? I found that too much gearing makes me timid in first gear cause I'm fraid I'm gonna flip it over and I wind up leaving a lot of et on the table. Most people that I've seen go crazy quick don't have to worry about the front coming up. They're geared tall enough so it less likely to happen and they're really twisting on it in first gear.

We run 17/47, slammed and stretched six inches. 60' 1.48, et 9.28/150. Cross the line about 11000 in 4th. Might be able to run 17/48 for better result. Keith

kcadby - any input from my post? I appreciate you might not want to give "good" info away. And can anybody fill me in on Shinko tyres. Don't know if we can get them in the UK and which is best MT or Shinko. Keith

Shinko is the best i've tried for street and strip,
Street version of the MT is not as good as the Shinko.
MT race is best for the track but will not last on the street, and has
very flat profile.
