STROKER CRANK WITH STOCK BLOCK AND PISTONS

Anyone out there using this set up? I was thinking what cc a 4.6 stroked crank with spacer plate would give me. I have a repairable crank that I want to have stroked and thought this might be a cheap option. Falicon quoted $650 to have the crank stroked and $150 for the balancing. Thats just $800. The cheapest big bore is the 1270 at $1100 with core.

Any thoughts?

If you have to repair the crank anyway that probably a good move.
If it's a spare crank you can do the 1272 or 1287 for close to the same
money as stroking the crank. My .02 says stick to stock crank as long as possible.
If you are only doing one or the other then go pistons.
I have seen and heard of many more problems with the stroker cranks than the piston kits.

You can INSTALL a good piston kit with good results .
If you start with quality kit like Muzzys or APE , i believe you can trust there
work. (good builder trust nobody and check everything)
With that said i expect a few extra ponies from an builder who would
take a few extra steps like piston prep, cc, cam degreeing and balancing.
Look at
http://www.zxzone.com/pistons.html
the way i see it.
(1) good pipe and tuning. (stock)
(2)pistons kit and tuning. (1270, 1272, 1287, 1317)
(3)crank and tuning. (1361, 1375, ?, ?, 1427)

What about 1320 or 1436?? Bigger is better........

The question is "purpose"...... Your kit choice is directly dependant on your purpose for the bike. The bigger you go, the more specialized stuff you will need. Just getting bigger piston and stroke is NOT NO NOT the end of stuff you WILL need to change.....

A 4.6mm stroke will give you 1299cc (same as a stock Busa!). Sounds cheap to me, but bear in mind you will need to retime your cams and use a base spacer.

"A 4.6mm stroke will give you 1299cc"
TRUE, but
1299 with a weaker crank and problems associates with getting the installation right vs 1287 with just pistons.
Anyone think that crank is as easy to install or will be as trouble free speak up. There seems to have been some trouble with people getting the cranks clean, which resulted in bearing failures.
Muzzy has made a change to held with this, but the jury is still out .
retime(degree) your cams will cost ~$200 for sprockets and $150-$200
to have them degreed. add $$$ for a spacer plate.
STROKERS COST MORE .
Even if cost were the same, i think the stoke crank is more reliable.
and the pistons kits are better than stock.
If the question is Bang for the buck,
I vote pistons FIRST then stroker.

To just install the crank in this motor is a ton of work. Actually most of the work is getting the motor in and out of the bike and putting all the crap back on it. I'm guessing you're doing the work yourself? This is a serious job. I wouldn't shy away from the stroker for reliability reasons. I don't know of any crank problems associated with strokers. I've heard of bearing issues with lots of motors but I don't really think those problems stem from the crank itself. If I had the engine apart, I'd have to go with the big bore kit also. It's simply too easy to do everything at once but if you're tight on coin the top end job can be done later and with the engine in place.

If you are going to stroke it then make a 5mm or 6mm stroke. Reliability problems are related to the bearings not the cranks. Many stock zx12's that i know of...more than 5 different guys have had bearing failure. The work to do the crank only is the same as crank plus pistons due to the needed spacer plate. If you wish to stay with non adjustable cams you may, but that is a waste too. I understand what you would like to do and that is save money. U can, but you won't be saving much money,,,,,less than $1000. Krexen i agree with U that taking the motor in and out is WAY MORE work than building the engine....whew!!!

???? Sence you are going to have to do something anyway I would do all that I wanted at one time. Insted of payinng to have the motor taken a part and put back to gether. I belive in blow the hole wad now so I dont have to keep spending to do the same type of work agin and agin. If this is an all out race bike the make it so. If it is you everyday bike make it that. Why keep paying someone to tear it down and put it back together. Now if you can do all the work your self then that is a diferent story. You have to do the crank so do it big. Then you can go big ont the top end latter with out having to do so much work.

DONT think you can go that big of stroke......rod end will hit the starter gears in the middle of case...UNLESS you want tp push start the bike or tow a strater cart around with you.
