Swingarm length question?

I have heard for every inch added to the swingarm is worth a tenth? So, If I added a six inches to the arm, I gain 6/10ths of et? I Don't understand the theory behind this?

So if you add a ten inch arm you go a second quicker ?

I don't think so? If you have a problem leaving with a stock arm,
then perhaps a longer arm will help you keep the front end down,
on the other hand, it moves the wheel away from the engine & rider.
The farther you go back, the more traction you'll need to hook up.

There is a balance of traction & power, with a long arm you need a good tire.

A longer arm will help lower your et's....how much depends on how you ride with the longer arm. Beleive it or not ther eis a difference bewtween long and short arms and getting use the them. That theory is not true.....you will go faster AFTER you get use to the extra lenght and set the shock up for that arm.

Well I went from a best pass of 10.07 to a 9.53 with only adding the arm and a year of seat time on it. so for what it was worth I had a 6" over arm and I picked up .5 of a second.....

AFTER you learned to ride it with that arm.....his post and question suggest you can just install one and pick up that much......have to adjust to leaving with the longer arm

yea that is what I meant doug! the first day I installed it I ran I believe a best of a 9.87 by the end of the weekend! (atlanta prostar 01) and my first pass I had a 9.97, so I automatically picked up a tenth, and then after a whole year of using it got down to the .53!! yea no magic wala! and your a 1/2 of a second faster.

I added 4" via extensions and went from 9.80's to 9.30's the first pass...It helped to not wheelie and stay wide open.

At 4"s that's better than a tenth per inch . . .

Go out and buy a forty foot arm,
Then the clock will owe you some time!

Your Car, where are you when we need to laugh?

What kind of 60' times are you doing now?
What tire does the bike have on it now?

60" bikes are putting down some good short times.

Guys I've got a 4" arm and i still wheelie. Is it me or, do I need to adjust my shock? Softer ?
My 60fts are low 1.6's to mid 1.5's. I've got my lowering links in tha middle hole.

RB, i can't tell if you are being sarcastic or funny, but:

1. the guys who can 60' in 1.4's @ 60" are just DAMN good; give them more arm, they'll go even quicker.

2. I am NOT really good, but adding 3" to my 6" arm, immediately put me from 9.05 to 8.907, and I had been trying to get into the 8's for a long time with no success with the 6" arm.

A tenth ET improvement for every in of arm extension??? Sure that's a gross generalization, but NO doubt about it, a longer arm allows pinning it earlier if you have the traction.

If you have the traction ?

I agree, my 11 had a six over arm,
it's about the same with or without a bar.

But I had to have it on a slick to hook - up.

I wouldn't go much over 6 inches,
If I had to do it over again,
I'd probably go to 4 inches,
And leave over the tank.

It currently has a ZZR12 arm on it & she's getting another bar.
Still have the 6" over arm with a bar & strut up for sale.

My 60' are still in the high 1.5's to low 1.6.Thought I would ask you pro's if this was a somewhat a true statment about the length of a swingarm. Must be me or the suspension setup or both.

Red the bar bike and non bar bike are complete different animals...
and ZX12Girl what length are you at now? I thought you were 6" over? if so yes you should be getting better 60', you compression needs to be as soft as you can without it hitting your fender, or just grazing it. and then your rebound need's to be as hard as it will go.

Ken, I have been going to MIR for track rentals and have been watching Norman Jackson on his 2002 ZX12...He has been running 9.45s @ 150/151 mph, on a stock wheelbase 16-44, timing advance, stock clutches with 1087 springs...Then he extened the swingarm to 60" wheelbase and ran 9.26 @ 152...So, I would say that you can get an actual 2/10ths with a longer arm!!!
