2001 HEAD IN A 2000 BIKE(att Doug Meyers)
Doug,you metioned something before about this subject.Could you elaborate as to what i have to do to make it work?Thanks

it's the cams specific the pickup not the head, put the correct model year cams with the matching head your good to go

last year I tried to put my A1 head on a A2 motor and nothing happened. The problem was the A2 motor which I had just bought had the pick-up damaged so we put my old A1 pick up on it. A1 pick up and A2 cams are a NO NO. Like Bergie Says you need to match the cams to the pick up.

okay, please clearify...........
1) Do you have to match the cams with the head?
2) Do you have to match the cams with the pickups?
3) Do you have the match the heads with the pickups?

I thought Doug Meyers mentioned a mod to the pickup and you can use the 2001 cams still?

like i said you have to match the exhaust cam with the pick up. dont matter what head you use.

OK. Listen up. I'm not going to tell you again:
There is a difference in the cams between the first model year (2000 or ZX12A1) and subsequent model years. This difference does NOT relate to performance, only the indexing of the Cam Position Rotor. As there is no sensor associated with the Intake cam all intake cams may be considered identical for installation purposes.
However, if the Exhaust cam is exchanged for one of a non-compatible year (i.e. A1 cam in an later model bike or vice-versa) the bike will not run. The following steps will assist in correcting the issue.
Proper identification of the bike model.
This is easy; 2000 model year is an A1 and the following years will be referred to as "later model". If in doubt look to the oil level window (lower right side of the engine): if it extends out to the clutch cover it is an A1. If the oil window is inboard of the clutch cover approximately 30mm (an average finger width), then the engine is a later model.
Cam identification:
The Cam Position Rotor has a key (small tab or bump) and is indexed in a notch in the end of the cam. It is the position of the notch that is the difference. Looking at the end of the cam opposite the cam gear note the location of the notch. Compare the position of the notch with the cam lobe being at 12 o'clock (pointed straight up). If the notch is at 6 o'clock then the cam is an A1. If the notch is at about 7:30 then the cam is a later model.
Setting the rotor position.
If the bike model and cam do not match the rotor must be adjusted. Note the position of the rotor as it is installed and mark it with a scribe or other suitable means. Remove the rotor by loosening the 5mm Allen head bolt in the end of the cam. (Take care that the pin retaining the Cam Sensor Boss does not fall out and get lost.) File or grind the inside face of the rotor flat, removing the tab so that the rotor may be rotated freely on the cam. Reinstall the rotor in the following manner:
If the bike is a later model and the cam is an A1: Install the Cam Position Rotor 45 degrees CLOCKWISE to its original position.
If the bike is an A1 and the cam is a later model: Install the Cam Position Rotor 45 degrees COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to its original position.
Note: The adjustment need NOT be exact, simply close. Most ECU's will work with the position sensor as much as plus or minus 15 degrees (at the cam).
Since there is no load on the rotor, the bolt is sufficient to hold it in place (the tab was only there for placement).
For those technically minded the rotor position may be set during the cam timing setting process (commonly referred to as "degreeing") when a degree wheel is on. Position the engine rotation according to the following information and center the Cam Position Rotor lobe on the magnetic center point of the Cam Position Sensor. This procedure will work regardless of cam type or bike model.
An A1 model bike ECU expects the cam position signal at 135 degrees before TDC of the power stroke of cylinder #4.
A later model ECU expects the cam position signal 45 degrees before TDC of the power stroke of cylinder #4. Bottom line: the ECU year and the rotor position need to match.
