Clutch set-ups

I know of several options from you folks who run your 12's and would like to know the particulars and the pros & cons to your own personal package.
1. Which clutch springs.
2. Do you run the two ring washer/springs behind the small fiber plate.
3. Do you use the small fiber plate.
4. Anybody use a different brand of steels & fibers.
5. Anybody tried the Schnitz aluminum plates.
Thanks for your time and trouble.

1. Which clutch springs.

Stock. I'm running a bar and slick. I tried the springs that came with the muzzy kit, but things worked better with the stock springs.

2. Do you run the two ring washer/springs behind the small fiber plate.

No. I threw those away and replaced them with regular plates the first time I went in there.

3. Do you use the small fiber plate.

No. I threw those away and replaced them with regular plates the first time I went in there.

4. Anybody use a different brand of steels & fibers.

Nope. I use the stock ones ordered from Ron Ayers.

5. Anybody tried the Schnitz aluminum plates.

Nope. I can't justify the price right now.

kzz1,
For sure!
Not so much the fibers, I just clean and measure them it's those %#@(*& steels that are wearing me and my billfold out.
I usually make every other pass when the bikes run and that allows me approx. 30 minutes between rounds. I use the 2m steels, take the oil cap off and zip tie the lever back between runs.
There's a wealth of knowledge on this board and I'm just tapping into it.
Thanks for the input, any others???

I might as well go on record here just to hear peeps say "WTF are you doing BA?"

6R springs (felt no difference, but measured 10% stiffer)

2mm Kaw Steels and stock Kaw. fibers

running 2 steel washer/springs with 2 big hole fibers on my 2000 12R.

never tried any other steels or springs. (reliable source said Barnett sucked)

I've not tried the Schnitz steels, but I thought that EDBADASS12 did......

I've been giving it the right side tilt twice before racing, and one long one at the turn-around after a race. (before picking up ticket)

I too take off my clutch cover cap, and use a VELCRO tie on the lever between runs.

I don't really know any "secrets" unfortunately.
My fibers are usually fine, but steels wear out after 20-30 or so good runs.
I think I launch around 5.5k or 7k but need to double check.

I've been keeping the fill level between middle and upper line lately to try to enhance cooling. It certainly doesn't make the bike any slower.

Can you tell me some of the problems you are having with your clutch. zx12 girl tells methat the clutch gets grabby and her et and mph suffers when her clutch starts to go south.

With a lockup the first thing you will notice is that your 60ft times will start to suffer. Everytime I loose a cpl hundredths I go back in and re-shim or replace the burnt fibers or steels.

when I forgot to soak my new fibers my clutch was very grabby on the launch...felt like the entire bike was shuddering and shaking itself to pieces. Ruined a perfectly good set of 2.0mm steels in two days (although that was at maxton).

clutch eats plates in direct relation to how long I hold onto it.

I am the Anti-Christ of clutch longevity...

kzz1,
Mine gets grabby also and creeps forward even though I adjust it frequently.
The only time my e.t.'s suffer big time is when I toast the fibers and the clutch slips in the higher gears.
I check the stack height on installation.
For the record:
1. 3 Muzzys and 3 stock.
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. No
5. No
Now I'm gonna do away with the springs and small fiber and try that combo.
Thanks again everybody.

I think I should have re-worded that...For instance. If im running 1.55-1.57 and all of a sudden end up with a 1.60 its time to open up the clutch for an adjustment. Better?

2. no
3. no
4. no
5. no

Racing the 2002, 16-44, BilletBasket, 11 same fibers, 10 2mm steels, just changed the clutch after 125 passes, 4500rpm launches, 1.62-1.60 short times...Akrapovic, Muzzy blockoffs and everything else is OEM...Usually 2 back to back runs with occasional 3 back to backs with 20 minutes cool down...

Ok this is what I have done, I'm running a slick and bar also.

1. Stock
2. no
3. 1, But I will replace with a full size next time.
4. no
5. no

I seen a post on here about drilling a small hole in the clutch puller rod. I had a friend at a machine shop do it for me and I have made 9 passes with absolutely 0 wear not even a slight brown spot, nothing. I will pull it apart this week after making 14 passes this past weekend and will let you know how they look.

I'm running about 1.40s in the 60ft and I still slide the clutch to keep the bike from bogging.

No... he means drill the puller. Only problem is you need an EDM to do it correctly.

Stock motor/arm, 210# (no gear), consistent 9.6-9.7 bracket bike. Get rid of clutch very early (4k launch). Not trying to kill it (ET racing), mid/high 1.6's.

3 barnett heavy (gold) and 3 stk. barnett 2.0 steels and barnett fibers. 1st pack, ~80 passes, slightly warped a couple steels, broke inside fiber. 2nd pack, no symptoms but checked at ~80 passes, steels/fibers fine, but decided to replace fibers w/OEM. Prob. 50 more passes now, no problems.

I've heard of the drilling a small hole in the puller, but just don't know who around here I could get to do it, nor how big to make it.

(damn roger, you broke the inside fiber too? I'm like the only racer who hasn't broken one!)

Sad thing is I've got a '78 KZ1000 I bought new and have spent 25 years flogging it at the strip with several hundreds of passes and it still has the stock clutch pack.

After I installed the 1075 kit, cams and smoothbores around the turn of the century the clutch started slipping in the higher gears. I bought some Barnett springs and that fixed it.

I know it's not a 180hp 12 but it will still run 7.0's in the 1/8th and high 10's with me on it. It's a heavy bike and I'm not no featherweight either!
Ah, the good ole days.
