Things I learned at the track this weekend.
The biggest thing I learned this weekend is that you are allowed to walk down the track in the morning before a race. Talking with your fellow racers is also good. One of the guys who has been dragracing bikes for over 20 years was nice enough to take the time and walk up and down the track this weekend and point things out. (Thanks again Scotty Hewitt!!)
The biggest thing that he taught me is that the three major car classes that run before the bikes (Super Gas, Super Comp, and Super Eliminator) all have very different tire widths and spacings. Where they overlap is usually where there is the most rubber and the most traction at the launch pad.
We also walked the track after dark and had someone shine his headlights down the track. We caught something that we hadn't seen when the lights were on. There were three GIANT divots in the middle of the left lane (right around half track). All of a sudden it made sense why I always got kinda squirrely in the left lane if I drifted out of the groove.
I think I will definitely make it a habit at races to show up waaay early so that I can get a chance to walk the track. Doing that was a real eye-opener for me this weekend.
