Advice to a newbe

I got the itch to drag... Im going in early Sept for the first time. What advise would you give me? Im looking for advise ranging form what to buy (this is for fun remember), what to watch out for, and the best way to launch this beast (safely)!

Thanks in advance

Start with the stock bike and have fun. This way you'll have something to compare to when you start adding things. Try to ignore many of the times you see on this site. You will most likely not get there on your first try.

Here's some stuff I found out the hard way my first few times:

1. If you're running on a pro tree (three ambers then green) don't try to time it. Just go as soon as you see the ambers.

2. Don't worry about your reaction time your first few runs. Expect it to just plain suck. If you focus too much on your reaction times, you may totally forget to slip the clutch and pull a FAT wheelie off the line. (I found this one out on my second ever pass.)

3. MadMike may disagree with me on this one, but make sure that you tell everyone that you're new to the game and you don't have a clue what you're doing. You will find that there are a lot of really nice old veterans out there who will be more than happy to pass on some of what they've learned. One may even take you under his or her wing.....until you actually beat him or her in a race. After that, you're on your own.

There are a gazillion more little pieces of advice we all can give you, but it'll just confuse you on your first few days. Just go out there and have a blast. You won't be able to rub the smile off of your face for a few days after your first day at the track.

From there, it's just a matter of tweaking and practicing until you get it figured out.

I don't necessarily agree on the spending part. If you're just doing it for fun, you don't have to spend a lot of money to race. The problem is that a lot of people (me included) can't just stop and have fun with a stock bike.

Sure in the beginning, it's going to be the best kick in the pants you've ever had. You don't care if you lose in the first round every race. You're just happy to be there and not fall off the bike. Unfortunately, this doesn't last long.

The progression goes something like this at the track:

Day 1: Wahoo!!! Wow!
Day 2: Wahoo!!! Dammit, I wish I could launch harder. I can't get this thing in the 10's let alone the 9's.
Day 3: (this is where it starts to get ugly) I gotta get me a strap and lowering links so that I can launch harder.
Day 4: Damn! The strap and lowering links really cut a bunch off my ET.
Day 5: Crap! Why can't I get this thing in the low 10's? Hmmm...do I get wheelie bars or extended swingarm. That'll definitely help out my launch ability.
Day 6: Sweet! I'm in the 9's, but why am I still losing in the first round?
Day 7: I gotta work on my reaction times. I need to go buy me a practice tree.
Day 8: Crap! I've modded by bike so much I can't ride it to the track anymore. I need a trailer. While I'm at it, I might as well buy an enclosed trailer like all the other guys have.
Day 9: I'm tired of just running bracket races. I want to go faster. Nitrous sounds like a great idea.
Day 10: Boom! Crap! I just blew up my motor! Well, I guess I don't really need to go to Hawaii this year. I might as well build up a bigger motor while I'm at it. 1361 with NOS should get me into the 8's.
Day 11: Wahoo! This thing is a real kick in the pants!!!
Day 12: Hmmm....the kids can get jobs and pay for their own way through college. I can use their college fund to get me a Kosman rolling chassis to throw that engine into. That'll get my 60's into the 1.1's and maybe get me into the 7's.

Some people take longer to go through these steps, but once you start, it's pretty hard to stop. It's a freakin' desease. Please save yourself while you still have a chance.

I don't know. I'm personally on Day 8. After that, I'm just guessing.
