Head cleanup or leave it?

Since I have my bike apart should I send the head out for a touch up or just leave it alone? It's a Lee's Performance build with stock valves but decent portwork and heavy-duty springs. Everything "appears" fine but should I send it out to have it inspected, cleaned, and the valvesprings tested or just leave it alone? This also brings up the question if yes, then where should I send it and what should I expect to pay for just a cleanup and inspection?

Look at the combustion chambers. Take the one that looks the worse and remove 1 intake and 1 exhaust and see what condition they are in, Look at the width of the seat on the valves and the condition of the seats. If they are not burned and still narrow, I would not do anything!

a little work unshrouding the valves is a good thing. If mine ever comes apart, you can bet the head will be touched. BB/stroke or not......

Now the question is who do you recommend to do the work? I talked to Carpenter's shop yesterday and they were complete jackasses on the phone and in a nutshell said they don't want to work on it since it was originally done by Lee's Performance two years ago. The shrugged me off, so I'll never be doing business with them EVER.

I guess I could send it back to Lee, but he's not cheap, and I'm broke any other suggestions? Schnitz?

The cleanup of Garys head on his 1361 looked VERY nice over at kevins shop.

No clue what they charge though.

Let me ask Ryan what he would charge for US to look at it...

We have 2-sets of oversized Stainless valves for 12s on the way (being made actually)

I heard a story about a Lee's built motor the other day...it made WAY LESS hp on someone elses dyno than what it did on Lee's...
NOT bad mouthing him...just repeating a story (from dyno guy that read lower)...

How much work do you want done to it??. With just minor work, like port matching and flushing the valve guides my head pick up around 8cfm. Not much really but it wasn't a whole lot done, which was what I wanted it..

Ryan said 2-hours ($120) but I talked him down to one...$60...you pay shipping of coarse...
Anything on top of "checking it out" would obviously be more...
We wouldn't do any work to it without first contacting you...

Im suprised you got treated that way by Carpenter. I guess he doesnt like to do "piecemeal" work anymore. I think he prefers to do complete motors.

I was going to say that also (about Carpenter)...they have been great to us on the phone...spending SEVERAL minutes at a time talking about ZX12s and Bbusas...we've only bought 2-sets of cams/springs from them...so far...One fer a ZX12 (1317cc) and one fer a Bbusa (1430cc)...

UMMMmmm...the $60 bucks is to "check the heads condition" SPARKY!!! aka-ycis (I know you knew that )...I'll check the springs while they're out also...if you want us to do it...

The 1317 is waiting for rod-bearings because we already had new ones for the stock 02 rods we were going to use...then the owner brought in Carrillo rods that use the early model bearings...
We also decided to install new valves which are being MADE for us...
Deck height will be done after the new bearings come in next week...
Carpenter has his own way of installing cams...NOT by lobe center...so I will install them as per his instructions after the motor is together...then check lobe centers...

Ok thanks Kevin, would definately be interested in hearing how it turns out. I think the 1317 is going to be a kick ass street motor. More displacement than the 1270 for more torque yet small enough to rev the hell out of..

Valves are Ferrea...they just got in the first set of blanks so we told them what size we want our valves to be

Give us a call tue-sat 9-6 EST Bergster...
(904) 389-1177
Ryan Kallina...son of the owner (he is actually the owner also)

Looking forward to getting the 1317 running (as is the owner!!!)...
I am also going to "squeeze" a 1361 for another guy here (AFTER 1317 is out the door) that will mostly be raced...so he won't mind running "good gas" in it... FUN Fun fun

Berie,

ryan does excellant work at Stock Mild to Wild. They have a complete machine shop and kevin knows some stuff too. ha ha ha.

Ryan will treat you right...goood guys down there

You do need to clean the head up and at least blend the bowls. The zx12r head is already good BUT it can be made better with the port toll int he right hands.

Doug the head is already ported, done at Lee's two years ago. I beat the snot out of it and just need everything cleaned up, touched up and double checked, especially make sure the valvesprings are in top shape because I want to step up the pills when I get it back. It should have the HD springs in it already, but they have 8000 miles and probably near 750 passes on them including last year and this combined.
