Well I think I found my valve clearance problem...
Well I think, I am going to freaking fire my mechanic or kick his ass!! oh wait a second shit that would be me!! Well I finally got around to pulling the head off again... and when I was pulling the buckets and shims I noticed that my copper washer/spacer looked like it was floating and I looked and sure enough they were all like that?? so hmmmm.... I start to think that isnt right! so I pull one off and start looking and weird the washer is riding on the ledge and not sitting down on the bottom??? so I grab the trusty clutch tool, and start fiddling around and notice this piece moves, so this lightbulb goes off inside my head and I'm just like Tommy Boy. @#$%@#$, @!#$$%@#@, @#$@#$ man I am such an Idiot!!! needless to say when you put in the HD springs you need to take all of the spring parts out of the head!!!! just a little tip from your Uncle Larry.... well I hope someone get's a laugh out of this, cause that is all I can do, oh and to really top it off I get home thinking I have a couple of beers left to make me feel better.. NO.... so here I sit water in hand drinking a cold one...
Mad Mike
P.S. I will let you guys know the valve clearance tomorrow night...

I've done shit like that Mike. it's an odd feeling of joy for seeing the problem, and wanting to kick your own ass for being stupid!
Hope she goes back together and becomes magically a little quicker this time around!
note to self........buy more beer.

Well that did not fix it but at least the HD springs are in correct! I honestly dont know what the hell could have changed? so I am going to re-shim it and go from there.

Nope one out, one in, and the shims are almost all the same size anyway?

so do you still have the spring cups underneath the spring? You have the spring seat, the spacers, the spring then the retainer right?

No I have the spring seat (copper colored washer), then the springs, the the retainer. the stepped cup or seat, is the section that I had left in that I took out.

WEIRD.
The vavle seat and the shim are the only thing that should change the
clearance with the same cams.
i believe.

Yeee-up...that's why it didn't make sense to me that the washers could have altered the shimming...
Do you still have the OEM retainers???
If not...the shim might be hitting/seating in the retainer instead of on the tip of the valve...

Ok found out a little more information. first the factory base Needs to stay in, but the shim goes under the base, and then you assemble it. so that solves the spring assembly part, now on to the rest of the problem....

Mike,
Something fishy going on.
1. valve head contact the head seat.
2. shim sits inside the retainer and ON the tip of the valve.
3. bucket covers the shim. ( didn't mix these did ya?)
4. cam clearance is between the cam and bucket.
Did you seat your valves in with a compound?
The springs, spring-washers and retainers Should have no effect on shim size.
P.S. I think Kcadby was asking you to check the retainer to be sure the
shim actually made contact with the valve tips.
"the stepped cup or seat, is the section that I had left in that I took out."
you don't mean that you left these out do you?
it should be the copper colored washer, the stepped cup , the spring, then the retainer
You probably know all this but i'm tring

ninja, no didnt change anything around and yep got all of the clearance stuff set, and no did not use compound, heard that it is really bad to do that due to it wearing out the hardening on the valves.. and yep got it correct on the spring set up now. will put in new shims and run it from there, and then I will check it in a month or so and see how she looks again, I believe I will have to send the head off and have it re-seated at the end of this season.
MM
Oh thanks to everyone for the tip's and help...

See BOLD PRINT...
Springs/retainers...
Will have NO effect on your clearances...UNLESS Someting is WRONG...
I'm not talking springs either...the problem would HAVE TO BE with...the Retainers, Valves or Buckets...
NO WAY the valves..."got longer" so the problem can't be with them...
STOO-ped question but...are you installing the same cams that were in it before???
THAT WILL make a difference also...

yep same cams. already ordered the shim's so I am going to do that with it. and go from there, I knew the springs and stuff would not make a diffrence but I thought there might be a clearance problem with the retaining clip. something changed it ? dont understad why but it looks universal all the way around, and about the same spec? maybe the shim faries came in and switched them all out. I will give an update of how everything turned out when I get the shims in.
