fucking clutch....
Ok...this is getting on my nerves now.
Clutch is slipping up top....so I yank it apart..find 4 warped steels....order 4 new ones...put it all back together....and now the fuckin clutch wont disengage(completely anyway) anymore.
Start the bike in neutral....pull in clutch....pop it in first (on the bike stand) and the tire begins to keep pace with the motor (rapidly too). The rear brake will stop the tire...but it just starts running agian.
So...I stop the bike...perform the normal "adjustments" on the clutch lever as well as the adjustment bolts on the clutch itself.....no matter how much I crank down on that top bolt (to put more pressure on the puller shaft and disengage the clutch more)...makes no difference...tire still spins like a champ.
Only conclusion I can draw now is that the stack height is too tall...although I cannot for the life of me figure out how replacing 4 2.0mm steels with 4 identical 2.0mm steels can cause it to be higher..but go figure :/
Going to swap out a 2.0 for an older 1.6 and see if that helps...but now im afraid the clutch will slip up top again when I get on the spray.

check your inner hub, it's probably worn grooves that make engagement/disengagement difficult and it's sticking slight. I had to replace mine.

I have the same problem when I put in a new clutch. It stops after I use the bike some. Kevin told me he had the same problem and to just ride it and the problem would disappear. It did go away.Practice a few launches. But you may have some more warped steels too??

Wouldnt warped steels make it slip more given less contact patch?
I was pretty thorough when I checked the plates....basically taking sandwiching each old plate between two new plates and checking for any gap at all much less the .whatever mm "standard warp range".
The only ones that didnt fit flush 100% around were the 4 I replaced.
I also felt like chalking it up to "its just new and needs to be broken in a bit" and didnt fuck with it after last night
Ill make a pass at Gville the way it is tonight...if it doesnt improve after that...Ill swap out a plate. Ill also check the hub...didnt even cross my mind berg...thanks!

OK Mickey M (thank Steve here )
If you installed the new plates "oil-eee" (like you should) the clutch WILL drag until it's ridden enough to throw the oil off the plates (and from inside the basket)...
Some clutches drag so bad when they are 1st intalled that I will sometimes even push the bike, jump on,THEN put it in gear so it won't KLUNK into gear the first time (this comes from my old Z-1 days...
RIDE THE DAMNED THING!!!
WHY did you only replace 4 plates???
Were the rest still "the right color"???

The fibers I put back in oil and they were coated to the extreme when put back in....The only plates that were discolored or warped were the 4 Inner plates...the rest of them showed zero signs of warp or any discoloration.

all in all, I'm with Harry. I can't tell you how often I replace my full set of steels and get your problem. You can adjust it out, BUT, then it's the opposite effect and you cannot get enough lever travel to have that little gap at the lever.
I always ended up riding it out as well. Can't recall how long it took though.
I think swapping for a 1.6 is a good idea in the short term.
good luck B!

EVERY time I replace a clutch pak, my bike does this. I just ride it around the neighborhood and shazaam, its perfect.

YCIS...You said you changed only 4 steels and put new ones in!!!...I'm sure the clutch would be even more sensitive with some of the old steels mixed with new ones!!!...I always change the complete pack everytime, only the frictions should be re-used or mixed with old/new, Just my .02 cents!!!
By the way hope you have a Billet Basket???

Yeap...only 4
If I mixed in the 4 I swapped out with the other 5 left in the bike...you couldnt tell the difference.
I usually replace them all too...but just dont see any reason to not replace non warped....non discolored steels. Seems a waste of money to me.
and I do have a billet basket.

no problem mixing used steels or fibers as long as the steels aren't warped (blue/black gives a hint) and the fibers aren't worn out (less than .126-7") or glazed/burned.
HOWEVER, a full set of 10 new 2mm steels and 11 fibers feels the best.
But especially when brand new, my clutch won't disengage correctly until i putt around the neighborhood a bit.

Boss, I just called to inquire about the fibers and steels...since the part #s are different. I already knew the 00-01 clutch parts would work in my 02.
Ron Ayers doesnt stock parts for the 02 yet. Only difference I can tell is that the 02s have a different looking fiber. And my bike took 12 fibers and 12 2.0 steels (no shit!)

The reason I asked is becasue I have an MTC lock up with an 00 pressure plate, cover, pull rod and clutch arm. It has my stock basket and clutch and is giving me fits to get working. I looked on the Kaw web site at the parts book but it said all the pars have the same nimbers. I did see 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 steels and 2 or 3 different fiber numbers?

Had the same problem. I changed all the fibers and all the steels and it was fixed. Went back with 10=2.0mm steels and 11=fibers.
Now my lever is releasing all the way at the top. And I have very little room for adj. in both the top adj.and the bottom. stk height was just within limits. Is this normal, or do I worry too much ?
