Shimming the oil relief valve on first gen zx14
What would be the correct starting point for a turbo motored zx14? the thinnest shim-washer i could find was .055 then i was told to use a .010 that seems almost nothing and were would i find one that thin in the right diam. thanx for any info.

Are you trying to raise oil pressure? If so, changing the shim will not do that. The pressure relief valve allows oil to bypass if the pressure gets too high (like due to a clogged filter, or VERY cold oil), which will actually reduce flow to the bearings. Adding a shim will allow the pressure to get to a higher level before it bypasses, but that should never happen with the pressure at a rational level like 70-80 psi or so. Any properly built engine will not require more pressure than that. More FLOW maybe, but that's a different thing altogether. Higher oil pressure than you need robs power and loads the pump drive needlessly......
On your Turbo you probably need more flow because of what you are using to lube the blower. The only way to get that is with a physically larger pump or larger , smoother passages and lines.
You probably know this but others may not.........

Thanx Doug, thants good info, i didnt want to go with the hp gear because of cavitation and didnt want to use the hp relief valve because users were having problems with them sticking open and closed, i just wanted a little more pressure to be safe. i shimmed it at .015 and called it a day.
