NIGHTMARE COMES TRUE (BROKE A ROD)

My worst nightmare came true last Thursday when after fitting a new clutch I took my bike out for a test ride and broke a rod. The oil light came on for a split second, but instead of stopping straight away I carried on. The second time it came on I shut down the throttle but it was too late. A sudden loss of power followed by a nasty noise and the engine seized. I got off the bike fearing the worst and just as I thought, a nasty hole in the crank case (right side just below the ign adv cover) and oil pissing out everywhere. I really want to know what caused the bike to loose oil pressure so quickly. Any idea guys?.

My bike was running +5 degree advance, 97 octane fuel plus 3% pro-boost. I wasn't running a pc but had the resistor mod on. The bike has just 300 miles on it since I had the head ported and the barrel skimmed (raising compression to 13.5:1. I wasn't using any gas at the time. The engine has done over 30,000 hard miles so maybe it was just a matter of time. Anyway I'm looking for a new engine now but money is very tight so this year is probabaly cancelled for me.

Ouch! keep an eye on E-bay, a buddy of mine picked up a ZX6R engine with the carbs and everything complete 388 miles on it for peanuts. Keep an eye out. You might find a deal on one.

If I hear of anything I'll post it for you as well.

Dude, he would be cheaper off finding another used complete motor. I have seen em as cheap as $1500 before. Sorry about your misfortune. I would guess that something happened when you had it apart for the head work. Something either fell in and locked up the oil pump or clogged the P/u. Hell, maybe you broke the oil pump shaft like Karl's brand new pump did. SUCKS

Wont be tearing the motor down for a least a couple of weeks but when I do I will definitely post some pics. Here in the UK I can expect to pay between £1500-£2000 for a decent motor.

Low oil level + hole shot + wheelie = pickup unport
Pickup unport = burned bearing + continued operation = broken rod

Other contributing factor - debris in the pan from the toasted clutch you just removed partially blocking pickup.

That's an air cavity, ( cavitation ) .

Thankyou velly much

Sometimes engineer speak throws me. The other day a mate told me he had a piece in the lathe and put a clock on it. I was wondering why he wanted to time his work until he explained a "clock" was a dial gauge...

Anyway, Ninja Missile isn't a wheelie fiend. Not much of a holeshot man either come to think of it (eh Paul? hehe....) He called me yesterday and has found some black rubbery gunge in the clutch. I reckon all will be revealed shortly....

Yeah, thats right!

Small pieces of Black rubber shit inside the clutch case. Usually when I pull the clutch cover off there is little or no oil to be seen, but this time the clutch was covered in black oil and small pieces of burnt rubber. Is it possible that some kind of seal\gasket got destroyed and fell into the oil pump and caused the blockage. soon I will be tearing the motor down so hopefully I will know for sure.

Yes if you find anykind of "Shouldent Be There!" stuff in your clutch #1 Drop that Oil Pan!!!! because if it is in your clutch or inside you clutch cover it means it is all over! and on cavatitation please explain a little more if you can because I do not understand it that way? from the way I understand cavitation is air bubles in your oil not an air pocket or are they one and the same?

I'd say..."similar" Mike...
Air in the oil pump mean cavitation for the oil pump no matter how if gets there...air pocket or bubbly oil
