STEELS AND FRICTION PLATE QUESTIONS

I'm I right in thinking that if your clutch steels are not warped then they can be cleaned up and used again. If so what are you guys using to clean off the burnt oil?

Also does anyone here know the service wear on the friction plates.

Cheers

I should measure mine. I need a damn Caliper tool thing.

I clean mine fairly often, and generally just use a strong dish soap, or something like 409 or Fantastic, and then a good nylon brush to get crap out of those little pockets on the steel plate.

Follow up with a good rinsing and put em back in until they warp. Well, mine warp often, so that doesn't end up being all that long.

I put a piece of sandpaper(600 wet)about 12"X12" on a piece of glass the same size.Soak it with WD40 and lie the clutch plate down on the paper. Then with swirling circular motion i sand the one side till burnt all gone then the other side.If i cant get it to look like new i chuck it.

Friction plates are 3.38 new and are pretty much junk at 3.22, you can mix and match a clutch pack with some 3.22 frictions if they are uniform or evenly worn with newer ones as long as the entire pack is between 56.8 and 57.6 being a new pack. The easiest and best way I have found to clean steels is wd40 and a wire wheel be gentle with the wheel don't push too hard or you will wear out the steel. The wheel gets the crap out of the friction dents in the steel plate surfaces which is very important a quick shot of brake cleaner and they are good to go I have personally reused steels a dozen times before they are garbage hope this helps out.

You can Bead Blast the steels also (not too coarse of beads though)...
