I would think mild steel, as there is no need for anything high-strength. I believe the CR plugs are zinc plated, as opposed to black oxide or nickel.

They weld just fine.I've made air adapters, TDC finders, dial indicator holders, etc.

Thanks guys
I run the CR10E since going to the turbo Roy, previously ran the CR10EK with my nitrous stuff.
I was thinking about trying to make a few surface discharge plugs out of some old ones i had kicking around. Ive had mixed reviews about running the E or EK for long distances at full power. surface discharge is the way to go, and if this works its essentially free. I must have 20 odd plugs that were more than ok but were replaced for new just in case. might not work, but i like trying stuff...

Oh no no no, don't try and make your own spark plugs.
Just go for a set of the surface plugs and keep running them. They don't wear out. They go for 25 hours no problem, probably twice that.

Scott - there are several affordable options to the NGK R0045Q-10,11:
DENSO RU01-31, RU01-34 ($44 ea)
NGK R0045J-10, R0045J-11 non-resistor ($21 ea)
Champion G54V, G52V non-resistor, non-removable terminal nut ($9 ea)
I think I'd rather try to machine down a terminal nut before I tried to weld up a ground electrode whose failure could lead to catastrophic consequences.
