aluminum clutch plates!!!

The Secret is out... Now we can let everyone know how Ryan Schnitz is able to pull 1.44 60' times on a 600. The answer is aluminum clutch plates!!!

Schnitz Racing now carries Hyperplates. These Aluminum clutch plates have a durable coating on them for long life. These are the same clutch plates used by Ryan Schnitz in his Championship winning ZX-6R. These aluminum plates not only save weight, but they also dissipate the heat created by dragracing. Great for all street bikes. These are a must have!

Applications include:

Model #of Plates Price
Kawasaki
95-99 ZX6R 8 $100.00
00-02 ZX6R 8 $100.00
98-03 ZX9R 9 $112.50

How would these hold up in a Multistage Lockup style clutch?

How thick are the plates for the ZX-12? Since there are 11, can I assume that they are 1.6mm?

Unless they genuinely last 2~3 times longer that seems kinda expensive.. 2.5X what we're paying for steels now.

Guess its time to find out

I guess since nobody can answer the question its time to find out. Just ordered my MTC lockup and need no frictions and steels anyway. I will see what MTC says first.

wow...pricey!!!

Yea..it would be hard for me to cough up nearly 3X the cost of the normal plates for these unless they certainly last 3x longer.

My experience is steel plates, replace the fibers first, Aluminum plates replace the plates and the fibers keep on going!

I personally believe the theory about Ryan's superfast 60' times is due to those invisible wheelie bars.
But if I can buy a set of aluminum clutch plates and turn a 1.44 sixty footer.....I'm there!
I'm thinking it's his dedication which includes countless hours and passes that makes him so quick, although the plates may help.

I almost said something like that when I first saw this thread
ALRIGHT! I'm gonna "buy" some 1.40 60FTs!!!

Ryans skills (IMHO) are the MAJOR reason for the 1.40s but...SEVERAL "little things" add up to his (and others) killer times...Lighter plates being just one of MANY things that they do to go so quick on those bikes...

I don't believe these plates will decrease my times enough to be worth the extra cost unless they also last EVERY BIT AS LONG (or longer) than the 2.0 steels do...On John's bike we get almost a full season (at least 100-runs) on a set of plates...
If I was trying to set records and or run heads-up...I'd HAVE to have them (and anything else I could think of) but...in bracket racing...quicker times don't matter...it's consistency AND reliability that matter to ME...

oldkawboy...
Ryan hasn't told you about the power he has over gravity???
He's heavy as sin (all forward in his head and arms) when he launches then as soon as he shifts 2nd...he becomes light as a feather (maybe even lighter)

ALL that being said...THANK'S for the info on the plates Ed...

On the passes where Chad has run Ryan the average 60 foot times between them are usually 1.46-1.47 for Ryan vs 1.50 -1.51 for Chad but the 330' is another story. Ryan's usually around low 4.00's to Chads low 4 teens. Ryan picks it up ALL the way through and that's why he is an inspiration to watch. At last years Alabama race Chad got beat by Ryan with a 9.73 to his 9.81 and Chad left first (I'm sure Ryan was playing it safe) but it was soooo close. After the race his dad told me that was the best 600SS race of the year as Chad was on his rear wheel.
Sorry for the rambling, I'm starting to sound like a proud Papa.

9.81 is fookin awesome for your boy on the 600 Dan, ain't no shame in being proud of that!!!

It's just silly that him on a 600 could outrun plenty of Joe's on Busa's.

Boyeez got Skillz!! S'up??!!

Thanks BA....But come 12 time, you da man!!
Chad sold his 12 and had hopes of running your times but it never came to pass.
Now lets see some 9.20's with that stock arm.
Dan
BTW, you gonna run Indy again?

My War Story, On my Superbike, I had a set of aluminum clutch plates and the bike went and felt faster. I do not know what they are made out of now, but little by little, The clutch pack started squeezing them until they were thinner and and I started needing an extra plate. I got mine from Barnett! I would not use them for the street, but had no problems racing! Of course I was not Drag Racing either, so I only had a few hard starts per weekend! I still have them, and was wondering when someone would get around to this, only 20 years later!

so no consensus on longevity & weight? i'm at 35,000kms on my originals, so if the aluminums would last the same and save a couple pounds to boot, i'd be in. but i'm suspecting they only save like half a pound or something. never had a stack out, but i'm guessin it's not all that heavy is it?

Freek, there is a serious weigfht difference, specially for something you need to get rotated! This is a race only item my thought!

I wonder if lighter plates will require more rpm to get the bike moving like an aluminum flywheel? In automotive apps, the lighter the flywheel the faster revving the motor, but the easier the power hits the tires. THe heavier the flywheel, the harder the hit on launch....usually big HP cars that are lightweight use lightweight flywheels....

thx wincent. hmm.. too bad. i woudla loved to shave a few pounds off the bike, but i definitely dont wanna do race-schedule maintenance, as i'm a strictly street guy (so far).
