RING GAP 1270 PISTONS

I believe there was a discussion a few months back, maybe longer, about rings being out of spec on 1270 pistons? If someone has a link to those discussions or more information please post here.

We suspect that our 1270 bike is losing some power due to the rings, mainly because it consistantly loses power on the dyno run after run.

Most of the discussions were about the oil expander ring.
The ends overlap when you put them in the cylinders...

Are you sure the frame (air box) isn't getting hot?
The gas tank and gas get heat soaked on the dyno also...

I know it's a pain to work on but...I'd do a leakdown and compression test...
If the rings aren't sealing...it will show on the above tests...the air will be comming out the breather tube during the leakdown test...
If it IS leaking past the rings...it wouldn't be the oil rings anyway...

Could be.. not sure? The dyno operator brought up the topic yesterday about our 1270 bike. I'll do a compression test this weekend. I'm not sure I want to do a leakdown, never done one on a bike before. I know when doing a leakdown test on my car we pull the rocker arms to ensure all the valves are fully closed... how do you do it on a non-pushrod engine like the 12R? Pull the cams? Sounds like work

Some people plug the air hose in then turn the engine forward with a wrench (timing cover side) until the valves close and hold it while they look at the guage...

If you have the patience to make it work??? You can use the timimng marks and put each cyl. at TDC compression and then plug the hose in...IF you are good at it (patience) and get it at EXACTLY tdc...it WILL stay in place when you plug in the hose...
DO NOT LEAVE THE WRENCH ON when you plug the hose in it WILL fly off if the motor spins when you plug in the hose...

Bergie, You may now understand that tacky GOLD Foil all around my bike! Notice that the Power only varied (Yes he was careful), 1 or 2 HP Hot warm & COld! If interested, I got it from Pep boys that the Car guys use on the side of their cars! If you take your time, you can peal the plastic layer off and get thin gold milar which does a real job of reflecting heat! Notice it was one of the first things Nick commented one!

I'm not sure that was it as my bike was building power as it got hotter on the same dyno with no heat wrap, so it could be 6 of one half a dozen of another.. I believe it reflects heat but I don't think that was Rich's 1270 problem.
