Care to settle an argument?
Someone on another board has presented the below site as THE definitive answer to breaking in a new STREET bike.
I can find a bunch of what I believe, non-truths and double talk in this guy's site. I'm going to run this by a Mechanical Engineer friend and see what he says, but I'd also like to hear it in English so I thought I'd ask you folks.
Fire away.

Well I dont know all I can tell you is what a friend of mine and I did, Ok brand new ZX12R, and his Brand new ZX9R. He was ripping and racing right out of the box, went to his first drag race at 50 miles or so. I did mine the old fashion way or Mad Mike's way, broke it in for the most part like I did my first brand new bike (yamaha virago 700 that has over 100,000 miles and my brother still drives). took it easy alot of shifting and very short burst of speed not exceeding by 1-2K on the RPM, of where I was supposed to do, untill the 1000 mile point where I then ran like no other, the only thing I did was race it one time at about 500 miles, and I did not take it above 10k. well moral of this story is My bike actually kept getting quicker and quicker, and never smoked. His bike smoked all of the time and never preformed like other ZX9's that I know of. so i personally think this guy is full of crap, Oh and look at this picture, there is NO WAY the piston on the right was used a full year of racing!!! the top of it should be black, it looks brand new.

but that is just my .02 on this subject.

"Because of the wind resistance, you don't need to use higher gears like you would on a dyno machine. The main thing is to load the engine by opening the throttle hard in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear."
LOL......Must not be talking about a ZX12 or Hayabusa!!!!
I guess that I can agree that you do not wanna ride it like a baby.....but.....
Rings may need to seat but it seems.....and I am by no means an expert (that's Kzz1's area)...........there are other parts of the engine that are tight and not ready for too much abuse!!!

i pretty much agree with motomans article, it is very important to load the rings and then decelerate to let the rings cool and flush away and particles. in my 30 years of doing this i might allow just a tad more time to the ride before WFO. I like to see about 150 miles before full load. and i also agree that the piston on the right was not run much. P.S. the factory runs all engines at redline before you see it anyway.

I beat the snot out of mine right out of the box. On the way home from the dealership I put it on the dyno, less than 40 miles. Within a week I was at the dragstip running WOT test 'n tune sessions at less than 300 miles. What difference did it make? None. Bike ran hard, and strong. Never smoked, never lost power, in fact I got faster but that was due to practice not the bike. Two years later I sent it to Lee's, tore it down and everything looked good. Fact is a break-in is a waste of time, you're gonna put pistons or a bigger crank in it sooner or later anyway! Just beat the shit out of it and be happy.
