wheelie bar virgin on a ZX-12

I have no idea how high off the ground to set these things. I'm nervous about them, what's it like when you come up on them? Do they dance you around? Or do you not feel them at all?

The rule of thumb for setting the bars is to use a 2x4 under the rear wheelie bar wheels....
Are you using a slick or street tire??? With a street tire you will tend to want to leave hard knowing your not going to flip over, but usually spins the tire.... With a slick it has awsome grip and will tend to want to pull the handle bars out of your hands because of the grip...So hang on and lean into it on the launch.....JMO....

Thanks, that's how I'll set it up.

do you get wicked fast times with wheelie bars vs. stretched?

if you have a slick make sure the rear hardware can take the hard shock. i have seen the adjusting bilts bent way out when the bike hit the tire and slid the wheel block front and did not care the adjusting bolts were there.
make sure the rear nut is tight.

I got the slick and bar thing dialed in !!

I need to know how you're set up ?? Tire?? length of the arm ?? are they the Pingel bolt on bars ??

here's a tip for you.....
DON'T strap the front end down while your running a strut...

Let's see your set up

Corey,

What Tire ????

Basic setup of the bars:

Make sure your rear axle is perfectly straight....This is important, because if the axle ain't straight it'll pull to one side or the other while on the bars !!! I have one of those motion-pro tools that goes into the swingarm pivot and axle. You can get away with a tape measure but you'll need two people.
Next the wheelie bar axle needs to be level with the bike.....Just as important as the above measurment for the same reason. I do this by putting the bike on a rear stand and getting the rear brake disc to be exactly 90 degrees to level (I'll shim the stand or just move the bike and stand around on a flat suface till the disc is at 90 degrees) Once that's done check the axle and turn one rod-end or the other till it's level.
Now you can set the bar height...because the bike is short I'd start at 1 inch from the bottom of the wheels to the ground. Turn each rod end the same amount or you'll lose the level of the axle.
Set the front rebound to all the way stiff so it'll snatch the front wheel off the ground at the launch and try to carry it about a inch or so off the track...
With the pingel setup...if you tighten the chain it raises the bar height and you'll need to re adjust.
use the wheels up (shoe polish) on the wheelie wheels till you figure it out...it'll give you a clue as to how it's hitting the bars....
This is just the beginning of a proper bar set-up (I just saved you what took me 4 test sessions to figue out !!)
I've only run a Mickey Thompson slick so if your running a street tire some things may need to be changed.
Be warned...i started out the same way and next thing you know..... I've got a slider clutch, 2-step, +12 arm, air shifter Etc... Etc... Etc.....

I ran a 25/7-17" on the stock wheel for a while...now I'm running a 25/7-18" on a RC comp wheel. These are wrinkle wall drag slicks !!

On my way to Sturgis for a test and tune in stock form -

I hit something on the road - came up broke my chain and fucked the bike all up. Case is O.K. but it has $3600 in damages. So, I can't do shit until the insurance company settles with me.

Parts are here waiting to go on....I have to order that slick tomorrow.
