been a while!
yesssss.
so. i got a new gig.. i am a steam turbine technician. money is pretty kick ass. i have been so ridiculously busy in general working 7 days a week at the shop and from the house but needed a change. i was tired of workin 7 days and not really getting anywhere with money. i was still check to check.. so far, in 5 days on a kentucky job i just returned from i made over a grand. hell per diem and travel allowance alone got me more money than what i make in a 6 day stretch at the shop.
i have another kentucky job coming up again. this one i think is 20-somethin an hour, 84+ hour work weeks and i am told its a 4-5 week job.. so i should me an assload of money. hoping to get my bike ready for loring. this work takes me all over the country.. well, has the potential to, and take me over seas or into mexico too. very excited about it. work tapes off in the summer tho as power plants don't shut down unless they HAVE to.. but it looks as if things are starting to align for me finally. you guys are like family to me so i just wanted to stop by and say hi.. i have my TFA shirt on right now too.
Jim.. i haven't forgotten about ya and will call you soon
heres a pic of the turbine i just did a bearing, hydrogen seal and oil cooler service on.
westinghouse unit. 450 MW
turbine is rated at 600,000HP
thats 600 thousand.. yes.
600,000
boiler at full load uses 7000 pounds of coal a MINUTE. do the math. thats a staggering number when you calculate a yearly input. lol
boiler makes 3,484,000 lb/hr of steam and has a volume of 414,817 ft²
2950ºF output temp @2400psi
turbine HP section is 2400psi, LP section is 600psi.
3,141,000 feet of wire were used.
the aux boiler water feed pump is a 5000HP square D 3Φ motor operating at 6.9Kv
the primary boiler water feed pumps are steam turbine driven.
6,180,000 gallons of water used a day
the yellow end is the exciter, orange round part the generator with a stator output of IIRC 24Kv @ 13,000 amps.. red round section is the LP turbine, BIGass orange housing is the HP turbine and governor section
i have a bunch more pics but haven't gotten a chance to put them up. this shutdown was due to a front bearing leak. the bearing is a 4 piece floating babbit bearing weighing.. if i had to guess, the bearing sections are probably 150 lbs a piece. the bearing cap had 4 bolts that got torqued to 2250 ft-lbs. 13" shaft seal. quite an interesting setup. the next job is i think a major tear down where we'll be servicing the turbine section itself. the guts of the beast. perhaps the stator and rotor too. not sure yet.
hopefully this will fund the bike going back together. lol
the bottom pic was from 40' in the air in a crane. if you look by the big blue gang box you'll see someone sitting.. gives you an idea of scale. lol

they put a gas turbin plant in near me. my brother went in thinking we had a good shot at working there. we both ran the electric plant under way on out navy ships and i was a gasturbin mechanic and him a electrician. i can boroscope and know what i am looking at and even have scars on my head from bumping into them. when the britt guy noticed i wanted 65,000 a year to be there 12hr shift salary bitch he almost spit his bubble gum out.
the units around here do not want to pay. i think the ones we met took the job there for 28,000. F that. i was siked on doing turbin work again but i guess not around here.
that super heated high pressure steam is crazy. best wishes on the new gig. i have given up working on that stuff. sawmill electrician pays well so i guess after 16 years i am not jumping ship as of yet. lolol

hellllll ya. i sorta lucked out on this one. i do electrical and fabrication work for a local laundromat. well, just so happens the owner of it is also 1/4 owner of this company doing the turbine repairs.
i talked to the pres of the company about opening an electrical division and i don't think he's gonna go for it, but the work in general is fairly easy. tho 16 hour days are not uncommon, i've worked worse jobs and longer days.. the pay is pretty damn good. started at 15/hr.. anything over 8 is 1.5 time.. every day is promised to be at least 12 hours. typical work week is 84 hours. this past 5 day stretch is.. hell i don't even know but IIRC it was a 12, 14, 15 ,16, and an 8 on the last day. i was entrusted with machining a $10,000 seal for the bearing.. which was cool. sorta stuck in the one dude's side i think since he thought he was a hot shot i guess.. but hes a young buck and acted all cocky. i had to put him in his place one time, but it seemed thats all it took.. i'm too old of a cat to be fucked with by a kitten anyhow and will NEVER tolerate disrespect. especially off some kid who's knowledge of industry, machining and fabrication wouldn't fill the palm of my hand.. lol other than little dude stepping out of line it was a GREAT experience.. met alot of cool people, saw tennessee and kentucky for the first time, saw some hilarious shit, saw some gorgeous countryside and badass roads i will have to take the other 7R out on ( i bought a 97 P model for $700.. i will probably build an 863 stroker out of it and use it as a track bike mostly..)
i am happy, overall. lots of work in texas so i will be dammn sure i holla at you, Karl.. and if in maine or anywhere else i got bikeland family at i will make sure i meet up and buy you lunch or something.. the next job should bring a good chunk of money in and i have a 6 bike build job in cali i have to do very soon.. i have the option of a 92 ZX7R as payment of some gofast parts and money. i will probably take that instead. i want the R, but i have no room for it.. i can probably get some cool rare shit and a ZX10R front end.. hes got 2 ZX7RRs and about 24 other misc bikes. some NASTY FZR1000 powered hybrid 600-framed, R7 bodywork-cladded frankenstein race bike making i think 190hp. got a few drag mustangs in the 4 digit HP territory.. dudes got alot of cool shit. hes up around san francisco. not sure just yet when i'll be out there.
anyway whats cool is that this opens the door to work for other companies doing similar work that are "extremely busy and desperately need more people".. so that may happen within a month.. alot of their work is overseas.. i look forward to it tho! i think it'd be great to see the world and get paid to do it. i'm very excited..
my goal is to try to get a maxton run in and make it to loring for sure. shitty to see maxton will be no more. thats definitely shitty and i wish it wasn't so. too bad we can't get a little coalition up to buy that strip.
who knows. if i hit it big enough, get my shop going and can manage my money and do the things i'm trying to set out to do, i myself will buy a damn strip of land and pave 2.5 miles of it if i have to. theres plenty of flat long strips of land around here... and i'll be damned if i let the availability of LSR tracks start to dwindle if *I* can help it..
so far the goal for the bike is to just get the thing back in shape. i hit a pothole and DESTROYED my front rim 3 weeks ago. how i didn't go over the bars is simply beyond my comprehension. so once the new rim shows up and i get the bike back on the road i will start to do my development. i have been shaving weight off the turbo motor where i can,. have a few machinist buddies who have access to stuff i don't working on a gear drive setup similar to the WSBK 7RR engine's oil pump and alternator drive gears ( as opposed to a chain) and i have found a ton of things i can mill, chuck in a lathe or slot and cut many thousands of grams on. theres 453 grams in a pound.. i have found several gears that can lose possibly 900 grams if i do it right.
so, with money, it really looks like i can finally start to make the dream come true. all i want to do is make a pass. even if it's not a record setter or on my bike. just wanna do it.. i'm in the process of getting leathers and afterwards the bike will be a focus of finances.. well, some of it.. lol i'll probably mess with the carbed platform until i can spend on the megasquirt.
REALLY looking forward to all of this coming together finally tho. after many years. maybe my string of shitty luck is over for a while.. lol
scott, it's quite alright man. i'll be going back out of town here in a week so i won't be making sparks here at the house for a bit.. i am gonna save some money for jim for something i said i'd buy off him.. and i am extremely excited about it and look forward to that and ned to make it happen asap.
ali, man i am not so sure i can do that. that bike slides soooo nice and effortlessly. and it looks badass too
you know i'm the fuckin drift king on the 7R. tho i do admit being an ass on the streets doesn't pay off.. lol
RR.. jesus man. thats no where NEAR worth it.28 K.. you can make that working in a supermarket as a manager. i DO love electrical work and in a way it's shitty since i feel my degree in controls engineering is going to waste, at least for now.. but who knows. maybe i will get my own biz back up and running or get the pres talked into opening an electrical maint division of the company i can do something with. maybe formulate a little business plan of sorts and present it.. see where it goes.
gary, dean.. it was great to see you guys as always at maxton and i will certainly make it a goal of mine to see yas again this year! i am hoping to have a decent truck that i will pop my TIG welder, air compressor, generator and a ton of tools on. rolling shop.. if i can make that happen i will certainly allow full access to any tools any one here would need.
time for some sleep now. my 7 day a week work doesn't stop after coming home. it continues with side work!
thanks again for the kind words and all.. i'll get some pics of the heavy duty shit i was balls deep in this past week. pretty cool stuff.

i am on a roll sir!!!!
definitely most of the stuff i try to accomplish hinges on money.. without that i never get anything done. now it looks as if the money will trade for time.
haha. oh well. maybe i can just pile it up then get done what i want done and take it easy!
i try to keep a full plate. as of now i'm looking at this power plant gig, ANOTHER one to soak time up in between the professional power services jobs, trying to get my shop going, getting a commercial appliance repair business going, possibly an electrical biz, being part owner/investor in a bar or something of that nature, and a couple other small things.
lol i never put all my irons in the same fire but.. i probably have more irons than most. just looking to be fucking wealthy as hell so i can enjoy life later on. i grew up dirt poor and never got to enjoy anything.. time to turn that around before it's too late.
YES RR thats the shit i loved and used to do.
i have a copy of RS Logix her eactually. play with it occasionally. all i used to do was retrofit relay logic machines over to 5/03 controllers and troubleshoot networked 5.05s and lvdt systems. when i was an engineer it was mainly siemens shit but the germans did all that. it was written in statement list and IN german. but possibly a doctor judging by terrible handwriting. i can understand german prints if i read them. IF i can make the words out! lol that was all S5 and S7 stuff. should be a similar machine to the first gen S5.. your TI controllers.
had TI stuff at the paper mill but i never worked on the programs. just the field wiring end.
when i was ther at the mill i was actually a mechanic.. thats where i learned most of the other shit i can do now.. welding and fabrication and machining and all. i'm more of a millwright with an electrical degree. love that line of work tho. if i find myself in your area i'll definitely stop by! love seeing new industry ( to me) and see how it works

Jim,
my advice is to
work yr fukken azz off,
go the extra mile in every way,
kiss yr boss's ass, work to make him look good in his boss's eyes
figure out what he wants before he asks for it.
Ask your boss for career advice, then LISTEN. All the old farts like to give personal advice.
Be the guy who is always asking questions, learning.
Be the guy who shows what he knows, not who is always talking about how much he knows
Be the guy who gets along with everyone.
Be the guy who everyone goes to when they need help.
Be the guy who stays on when the crew gets cut in half.
And...
You know what being broke feels like; now slow down on yr bike stuff a bit and find out what having money in the bank feels like.
I'm an old bastid and thus can give out a whole buncha unwanted advice when ever i feel like it.

ali, with my build skills.. i admit i'm no jim or doug anything, but damn it i promise you i will spank that gixxer's ass. i absolutely put money on it. i have found TOOOOO many ways to make power on top of already being boosted. as i said earlier theres 453 grams in a pound. i have found SOOO many things to strip grams, and in some cases several hundred grams fro, that the weight loss alone just in the motor alone on shit like the alternator drive hub and things like that will free up a ton of power.
i will beat that gixxers ass.
Karl.. I try to be exactly that, man! haha i usually get along with people instantly.. tend to shut my face when ppl are talking and learn whenever i can. i don't brag about what i can do. i simply do. i was entrusted with machining a $10,000 seal ring for the turbine bearing.. i mentioned once i was an experienced machinist and let it sit at that. didn't go pushing it around like a badge of honor.. and sure enough i got the opportunity to sorta prove myself when the president of the company tossed me the seal and said set it up, let me check it, then we'll run it..
and thats what i did.. and i have my 2nd confirmed job coming up in cumberland maryland in april on the 9th.. so thus far i am doing well. lol. i'm not one to really talk all sorts of shit. i just stay the humble guy i am and do it. theres alot of things i do that people only know i can do unless i show it off a bit or they know me.. machining and welding is one of them i don't go flaunting.. mainly because i know enough to get by, really, and to get things done safely and accurately.. but if someone were to ask questions i can't answer i feel like a douche. lol
i will maintain the 7 day a week thing i'm doing now, save money, get the bike built slowly and just do what i set out to do.. which is win
