what would tool would you buy

if you needed to measure the small ends of rods and wrist pin bores say 2-3 times a yr? or would you just take the parts to a shop?

You can buy a small bore gauge that measures in .0001" increments.

We use the dial bore gauge on the rod hone machine.

Why do you need to measure them (so often)?

I think I'd take them to a shop with a Sunnen pin hone and have them checked, and honed. Oh wait! That's what I already do.

Scott, with some new pistons the pins are most often too tight in the pistons anyway. They need to be honed a few more tenths. We have seen new pistons with only .0004" clearance in the pins. Not good on a racing engine.

Speaking of Sunnen...... I just ordered a new Sunnen small line hone mandrel so we can line hone the mains on these bike motors. These mains are all over the place. Tight spots everywhere on my zx14 cases. Cylindricity is something you cant measure with a bore gauge.

I was wondering if any one uses an index rod on any of the plain bearing crankshaft motors. I have two sizes 18mm and 20 mm purchased from Falicon and when ever I have a top end off I always check the index.Since I am using it on press together ball bearing crankshafts by inserting it through all four small rod ends at the same time to see if the crank has twisted any.Would it be usefull or any benefit on plain bearing cranks ?As far as measuring small ends and piston bores I have a small set of cheap telescoping bore gauges since they just transfer measurements I spent the money on the micrometers plus I can get then into small places through out the motor.Though I use Mitutoya dial bore gauges for cylinders. Also has any one used the bore gauge that looks like a peace sign with four contact areas? Centers things up and looks cool. I have been thinking about getting one.

Yes very shortly.

GS11, its best to directly measure bores.

I faithfully used my 17mm index rod on my KZ`s ANYTIME I had the topend off or got a new crank just to make sure.....

one lil issue with line boring, gotta make sure you have bearing to accomodate the additional width. My Carpenter design billet crank is already running at the thickest main bearings available. I could only tolerate a couple tenth's max add'l width on the cases.

Were not going to line bore. Just line hone.

Yea there isnt much to work with Karl.
We are basically going to just remove the high spots and true up the sadle alignment.
Were talking tenths here.

It would be great if they made .002" o/s o/d bearings.

what kind of time frame and price are we looking at for line honing cases Jim? you might be getting more than a damaged cylinder head from me. are there any oiling mods you would suggest?

I'll have more info on line-honing the mains shortly.

We normally do some porting of the oil pump housing to reduce the chance of cavitation.
And the Suzuki's need a passage drilled out if the oil cooler is removed.

Since you mentioned a toasted pin bore.Have you or anyone else seen or have used CP pistons? I was inspecting some the other day for the first time and noticed they have two small holes bored from the inside of the oil ring groove on each side leading to the wrist pin bores.Seems like a good idea to me. Besides having some wild ring shapes don't know about those yet.Any thoughts about the extra oiling of the pin bores?

I havent used(or held) any yet, but i hear great things. these are JEs and only have 1 hole from the oil ring to the pin bore. they had massive contact with valves though.... which is why i only got 3

fyi OSR wasent even sure if these were any good and hasnt even got me to pay yet... good guys.
