primary coils
All eight of the coils that I have(4 bought used on ebay) have a reading of 1.6 ohms on the primary side of the coil. The manual says the upper limit is 1.15ohms.it just seems weird that all sticks have higher resistance then spec. Can someone check their coils for me and see if they are all under the 1.15 range? thanx

To be reading that low of ohms acurately you need a high $$ meter. Your average DMM cannot give you a true reading in .00 ohms.

I see that new coils are $86 each. Is there an improved and/or more economical 3rd party product?

It was about 45* outside when I did the readings on the coils. I started the motor a few times checking alternator output and then retested the coils. The readings jumped a little to 1.7-1.8 ohms.
Just a fyi to see if temperature made much of a difference.

ohms can go up with higher temps. higher ohms will be less amps load on ecu but i bet less voltage at the plug gap.

2009-2010 ZX-6 Coils are the best one's to use. They have a higher secondary output/spark than any other one's that Kawi uses. The 2011 ZX-10R will have the same one's on it too !!!!!

Will they fit in the zx12r head?

Also, where can I get the fittings to make my own adapter for reading the voltage at the coil like the dealer has?

i was lucky and had a 98 honda car engine bay harness and that had same style of plugs i robbed the male and female pins from for modding my harness for ecu programing. maybe if you go to a car the same year they will share the actual plugs. i say there is a good chance.

Or better yet just send your original equipment ZX-12 coils to this company right here: www.okadaprojects.com........They done a set of (OEM) ZX-10 coils for me a couple years ago. They increased everything on the stick coil. I saw 2-3 horsepower increase on dyno versus the stock stick coils. Changed them out on the dyno within 20 minutes of each other and thats the performance increase that i saw !!!!

I checked them out and the negative voltage spikes can damage the ecu at low rpms. I am not so sure it will fit under the monocoque frame.

No. Call them and they will tell you to send them in and they will inspect and assess them and tell you if they can do them for your application. I have had no problems with mine whatsoever !!!!

I called Okada projects and they told me they didn't have anything for the zx12r. Their web pages haven't been updated which is why they are still on there. It was quite hard to understand the gentleman as his Japanese accent was very pronounced.Too bad!!! I would have tried to dig up some quag for that.

I think MSD is tinkering around with some of the stick coils too. Give them a shout and see if they can modify yours to increase secondary voltage and make them a lil bit hotter all around !!!
