it is a 2" receiver.
Not air shocks, but i have had an air lift system (air bags in the coil springs), since soon after i bought the car in sept 2007

class three hitch is more than enough for what your towing. The old cop car probably will struggle on the hills in pa, ny on your trip to Maine.

Trailer brakes would be a good idea to keep the tail from wagging the dog under hard braking. Tandem axles reduce tongue weight, but make rolling the trailer around by hand kind of a chore. They also provide redundancy in terms of flat tires, but replacing worn tires will cost you twice as much.

I think the tandem axle units will be substantially heavier, which might be a big drawback.
But if you are going to take your driving cues from The Blues Brothers Movie...definitely get those trailer brakes.

Air lift system,sweet........
Are you still running the cop modified ECU?
Which isn`t much over stock....If you get a tune like something similar to what mine has and free flow mufflers it`ll haul that tandem just fine....Mine went from running 16.2`s (what a cop car runs) to running 15.4`s after the better mods.....And I can switch between a modified perf. map to a street economy map by just plugging in the hand held....

hey Guys,
Thanks for the continued tips.
I will look into both single and tandem axle 6 x 12 trailers.
I never messed with the copcar's ECU, too busy last 3 years messing with my ZX12.
Now i'm too busy messing with the Busa. Always too damn busy.
One o' these days i'll get around to messing with the CVPI, rather than just racking more Miles going to races.

I plan on pouring a slab behind the shop for trailer parking. Can’t afford a cover right now but adding a bit of concrete for a second trailer is not an issue. It’s a bit far but the rent is free and you would have 24 hour access.
I am planning on purchasing a used v nose two bike single axel trailer with electric brakes. Stay away from surge brakes as they can sometimes be tricky to adjust. The only advantage of a tandem axel trailer is weight capacity. For long trips a load leveling hitch is a nice option.

Randy,
thanks much for the offer of free space!!
As you point out, we aren't exactly next door neighbors, but good on you for offering.
In googling V-nose 6x12 mc trailers, i am surprised at the lack of used offerings??
Also, can't seem to find any single axle 6x12 with electric brakes.
oh well, i will keep on researching!

ent please get one with brakes. all it takes is one 'O' shit moment and that 3000# plus trailer will push you where you do not want to be. i toed no brakes before. never again.
sounds like your car is set up except for a brake unit for the trailer.
get a swinging pendulium (can not spell) in stead of a cheepy. the better kind swings with your braking power from the car and applys the trailer brakes nicer and follows your car braking when set up. a 50 dollar box just comes in sort of soft and tapers to full gain (what ever you have the max set at). those you have to fiddle with from highway to city. my brother had one. they stop the truck by slaming the trailer on unless you turn it down for the city.

You prefer surge braking to electric? I have driven surge brake trailers and while they did OK there was a tendency for brake pressure to oscillate under light braking. It seemed to me when the vehicle’s brakes were applied the trailer slowed but then eased off just a bit as the trailer slowed. Under hard braking there was not a problem.
I too am looking for a trailer. After quite a bit of searching I am leaning towards a Haulmark 6 x 12 v-nose. Torsion bar suspension. Electric brakes can be added after the sale.
The salesman said brakes were not really necessary until you hit 4K GVW. Since the trailer is rated for 3.5K GVW in his opinion and experience there was no need. But opinions vary. Cost of electric brakes is $200 plus controller (another $200).
A distinctive advantage of electric brakes is a breakaway feature. A kill line can be run to the hitch. If the trailer breaks free a connection is made and a battery on the trailer engages the brakes. The trailer batter charges off the vehicle’s electrical system.

if the question to me on surge brakes i say no. the unit i am talking is a electric brake unit that had a leveling adjustment on the box. you adjust the level for the pendulium. as you apply brakes the piece swings forward (as it has to) and it in turn applys the trailer brakes.
if you dive on the truck (or cop car ) brake pedel it adds a lot of brake for your need. if you just toe the pedal in town it it will do that to the trailer. (plus or minus how aggressive you set it) a car or truck that has weak brakes you may need to have the level set to bring in the trailer sooner.

I would not get surge brakes, and a tandem would pull so much better with torsion axles.........
that car is going to sway alot......
Karl, I have located some used cold air intakes, actually off the old police units I used to drive here. My old firearms trainer, is retired, and a used car sales man now, and he buys a ton of police units, and he bought some of ours........, i will contact you when i know something for sure.......

surge brakes work well when they work well. most do not take care of them. they figure they just work.
i my self think electric brakes are cheeper and less maintenance in the long run but a surge brake trailer will cost more also.

Because you are only going to haul 1 bike in it and two bikes once in a while I would stay with the lightest trailer possible. A single axle trailer without brakes weighs a LOT less than a two axle with brakes. The frames are lighter because the GTW is much lower.
You may even want to think about an aluminum frame trailer.
This car will have a tough time hauling a two axle trailer loaded with two bikes and equipment in it up hills. The 4.6/5.3 engines are (I'm trying to be polite here) not very torquey or powerful engines. I wont get into the carnage we see every day coming in the shop from these engines. But these engines have several "weak" links. And its something to consider.
The tongue load isn't an issue as long as you load the trailer properly so you have the proper tongue load. Once you set the condor chock for the bike in the proper location front to rear and load the trailer with the usual contents for a typical race, you don't really have to worry about it much. When you put a second bike in there you will need to reconfigure the weight loading.
But for that cop car I'd keep the weight to a minimum. Aluminum trailers are more expensive but in this case it might be worth it.
When I was looking at trailers I looked at used . Well tried to look at used ones anyway.
I looked for 4 months and there were only a few I was able to find within a few hundred miles or so and they wanted damn near as much as what i could get a new Haulmark for.
These things are like gold around here.

I have a 7x14 Tru-Toe that I use for my racing....I tow it with my Tahoe and works really good....Like you say, depending on how you load it means everything.....I`ve seen lots of people load their bikes in backwards(rear wheel in first)....To put the motor weight where it`s supposed to be for their trailer....I think a dual axle wouldn`t be needed unless you are going to be loading up multiple bikes and lots of supports equipment.....

That car, with a single axle trailer, if he got a trailer flat would be a handfull..........., tandems are safer in that respect.......

ent when we towed a 14x7 single axil (yes it had brakes on the axil) it would sway side to side on the tires from time to time.
we never got a flat but i bet it would of pulled around real bad.
oh it also towed like a stone. but we usually had two track bikes plus equipment when my brother road raced in west by GOD virgina.
