how much trailer could i tow with my cop car???

2005 Crown Vic PI

I currently have a Kendon 2 bike trailer which it tows like it isn't even there.

But

I'd really prefer a 2 bike enclosed trailer.

Any thoughts of how big a trailer my cop car could handle on trips to Maine, Mojave, Miami, etc????

Karl, get a low profile v nose if you do it......., wind resistance on the low crown vic will be the issue......

Put a TB spacer on it, and a cold air intake. It was almost 2 mpg on my old police car when I was a cop........, made a huge difference on performance......

Yeah Karl, the ones with the v nose do very well.

I would also fabricate a sheet metal airflow separator for the top, trailing edge of the trailer. Just take a look at most new small SUV's, truck tailgates and cars with blunt rear ends. The manufacturers have all added these to bump MPG.

You need to check the owners manual and then deduct 10% from that because they are always optimistic. You'll need a way to adapt the trailers brakes into the car and any team fat ass members riding in the car count as total weight.

Pete, thanks a million.

I did some other googling and found that although 5000# is spec, seems to be concensus that about 3500# is fine.

so a 2000# trailer, 2 bikes and a buncha normal race shit should be easily doable.
That is WAY more than i previously thought it could handle.

the pisser will be where to store it, as my subdivision doesn't allow that kindo stuff in the driveway for more than a couple of days.

We have a 6 x 12 V-Nose. Hauls two bikes and gear with no issue. I believe the trailer weight is either at/under 1300 lbs.

One axle. No Brakes on the trailer. We paid $2500, new, for the trailer. They can be had cheaper. We have two Condor chocks installed, bikes are staggered. Can also carry two long bikes without issue.

We towed the Busa and my 14 up to Maine. That included the trailer spare and a couple of sets of bike tires, full tools, race fuel, spares, etc. I am usually fairly well outfitted, I basically bring the garage with me (if in cardboard boxes, lol).

We towed it up to Maine with a 1997 GMC Safari Conversion. We have also towed it with a 4Cyl 4Runner and an F150...

Next year, Karl...next year we turn wheels in TX!

Shane,
very good info, you helped me decide that i will do it.
Prob keep my eyes open for someone selling already set up for 2 bikes.

I'm gonna sell/part out the 12 after Texas, but it is walys good to have 2 bike capability.
Thanks again for the info
Karl

I think the 4Runner was also rated at 5000 lbs towing. We just left it in 4th gear on the highway. That is a heavy truck, pulling a loaded trailer, and on only 4 cyls. The van is just a 4.3 V6, and it is also a heavy vehicle (Fully Outfitted Shaggin' Wagon).

I have a 2001 CV P71 with every perf. mod added to it....
I bought a hand help programmer with 2 custom maps programmed into it. www.sctflash.com...It REALLY made this car pop.....Go to www.blueovalchips.com and talk to Lonnie for more info....
I`ve been wanting to know how much this thing can tow too....Probably gonna need some air shocks....I also put a set of Flowmaster mufflers and 3" pipes on it too..a true cold air intake....I heard the TB spacer wasn`t worth doing because there wasn`t any measurable gain from it....But an exh. system and a tune is well worth it for towing a trailer.....

Karl you saw my trailer. Its a 7 x 12 single axle no brakes Haulmark.

You wont need brakes on a small single axle trialer. It doesnt weigh much.

We had a place in Little Rock, or North Little Rock custom make them, cause the intakes are on the opposite side from the Mustangs.......

Lots of whistle at low rpm, but good torque......

I will see what I can find out......

Also, get a double axle, with brakes, with torsion axles......

If you pick it up at the factory, Vintage trailers will custom make you one. My trailer was custom made.....

If you get a low rise....., it will fit into your garage, I have some friends that have that issue. I am lucky, I just cannot have it in the driveway, but I have a 40 ft paved area next to the garage.

I am not sure but it may lower the tongue weight with two axles. The tongue weight is overlooked a lot and would effect how much squat in the back of the car.

How big is the receiver??? A 2" receiver is the size of my class3 on my Tahoe....I think class 1 and 2 are the smaller receiver`s....Have you put some air shocks on it yet???
