might be time for the dry sump...
so first pass off the trailer friday night, (i had adjusted my shock a bit softer as i wasnt gettiing full travel) it hooked up hard for 8-10 feet then lit the tire up, slid around a little, but went pretty straight. the track wasnt great and a few guys were spinning. even with the spin, i got a 1.40 60 ft. looking back i think i unported the pickup on the hit as it was definately headed into the 1.3s if the track had of been there

down on mph, no map changes, very similar conditions, i hit my shift points....
i try ity again, making no changes to the bike, it starts a little hard, i think battery and go up to the lane. shuts off after the burnout, starts harder (i have to shut the fan off in order to get it to fire up)

just after the finish line parts of #4 rod come out of the front of the cases.... oiled up the rear tire, but i kept it up ok and got stopped without major issue. oil soaked header wrap and plastics on fire and saftey gets it out pretty quick...
so my season is over, ill get pics up later tonight after i pull it apart, we stayed and ran dads bike today

i recently picked up an 02 motor with a spun rod bearing, very minor damage, so that will be the start of the new build.

scott, what oil were you running?
also, whose pan is that......?
If those numbers got a motor, without a dry sump, I would blow motors all the time......
I would assume something else was the cause, not the et alone........

cams look ok to me, but i will probly give them a spin in the cap with a DI on a few places

major contact, but no broken valves( a few bent valves)


still getting mild contact on the exh side....






crank is done, teeth on the gears are really bad, a few chips on the trans, but mostly ok




whats left of #3 spins fine

It's looks like you got "lucky" on the head!
So, what do you need now...cases, some rods, crank, 1 or 2 pistons, a few valves?
Since you have a spare motor, it sounds like you could have a 1287 together with somewhat minimal cost.
It could be worse...

i did get really lucky on the head, it will need a few guides(some are cracked), valves and probably a valve job.
even at "minimal" cost, it will be next season before i have something running, the spare needs a rod journal fixed, and im at my budgets limit for the yr
lucky to have it stopped with the rubber side down

So did that killer tran`s make it through it ok, basket,lockup??? You put so much time into making sure all was good with this motor..... I can`t take hits like that anymore...I`ve had my share of blown motors in my time.... I`m stickin with my STOCKER from now on....

most of the trans is ok, a few chipped teeth, it could probly be run with just a little dremmel work, but i may replace a couple gears.... im wanting to do the OD 5th and 6th anyway
basket is fine, but the backing plate is messed up, so it will be going on a new gear core. lockup is fine, hub is fine
a stock motor will tear itsself up just as quick if its starved for oil...so dont think its a safety thing by staying oem

I would be investigating the cause of oil starvation....doesn't seem like the launch was the cause? Maybe the oil pan setup? Something with the oil pipes, relief or pickup?

I know im done with messing around with any wet sump design, just incase...
it burned up #4 and the outside main beside #4. dads did exactly this in 08 when we had that really shallow oil pan on it

Scott that's a bad one. Really feel for you. I would suggest that you magnaflux any tranny parts you re-use. It's not expensive and will really give you confidence in your new engine. No reason not to use them if they pass mag. You won't be wondering about the cracked dog or tooth you may have missed.

I think ill send the trans to R&D, get them to check it out and add the over drive gears. its worked awesome since 08 when they did their magic to it.

That sucks Scott........
If you really copied the Adams pan design that shouldn't have been the problem........with my 1/8 mile gearing I'll 1.28 sixty foot all day long !! You don't need to go to all the expense and weight of a dry sump.

Scott, im not trying to be a wise ass by saying this...
The only mods you should be putting on your zx12 is from Coby Adams!!!!!
Coby knows Kawasaki's, his parts maybe a few bucks more than some other guys but you get what you pay for, & actually you'll be saving $$$ down the road with Coby Adams since you wont have to rebuild broken motors...
