Gas porting reduces the ring reaction time by creating a shorter and straighter distance for the pressure to get to the back on the ring.
It also reduces ring life.

Coatings can be to reduce heat and or friction or improving wear.

Did you call Bill about the 1427 ZX12r for sale?

i did he wants 9k. worth it i know but i can get mine running for a lot less, besides i already hav 3 12's. thanks. old
