ok, whats with the popsicle sticks?

I am in my usual struggle to install the cylinders and remember entropy talking about popsicle sticks. I had assumed they were fitted in between the pistons to hold the rings compressed while sliding the cylinder over the pistons. Who knows, maybe I had the wrong size sticks. I think mine were made for arts and crafts. If this was the intended method, would ring gap positioning be critical?

Probably put under the piston skirts to keep the pistons level and straight while lowering the cyl. over them? Maybe..

lol. No man, you use them to push the rings in when installing pistons.

That seems to be where my trouble starts. Not much of a taper on the bore.

ding-ding-ding, we have a winner!!!!!!

BUT...

On cyls like Pete's & mine with virtually no chamfer, it is REAL FUKKEN difficult to put the block over the pistons, no matter how many popsicle sticks you have.

In Feb, I had 20,014 popsicle sticks and still could not do it, so i bagged em up and brought em to Tim Chin. Brenda Sue & I put the 6 garbage bags of sticks in Tim's car at Mojave in March. We need a report, Tim...

I always put the pistons into the cyl before bolting the rods to the crank.

Any tips on installation when cases are not split? Do you guys put 2 in the hole and then the other 2 or work all four together into the cylinder?

It is easier to me to do the two insides first with them being at there highest point of the stroke then rolling the crank about 90 degrees to get the outside ones in.

Tim is probably making wood shavings out of them so I will have a fresh nest for the trip to Loring. If not it is going to take twice as long to get there.

thats how i do it when the cases arent split. its about a gazillion times easier to do it one at a time with the cases apart.

last yr i put dads block down over the pistons instead of one at a time. his 1287 block was done with NO chamfer (by request). it took both of us to say the least....

Actually, I was thinking of using them, along with some aircraft structural epoxy, to make things. Strange things. Unnatural things. Or I may donate them to my kids' preschool for arts & crafts projects.

School me please! I would like to know why you requested NO chamfer on the bottom of your cyls. What is the advantage? More surface area, less piston rock, better oil control, less blowby.

I was kind of wondering that myself.

we eventually plan on putting a big crank in it, so added skirt support was the goal there

Hmmm Makes sense to me. When I chamfer 2 stroke ports that is what I'm going for also. Especially the chamfer at the bottom for added support besides all the transfer ports all add up to less surface area and can also alter the port timing ever so. Thanks
