I finally know what happened to me at Rockingham
I did not want to post this until I found out exactly what happened to my motor. I drove 600 miles to Rockingham and got there around 1:00pm on Friday. I went to test and tune and on my first pass, everything seemed perfectly fine until I slowed down to turn on the return lane. As I turned on the return lane my bike started missing extremely bad to the extreme that it would not stay running unless I gave it gas. I was extremely upset and loaded my bike on the trailer and came straight home. After pulling my motor out and taking it to Schnitz Racing. I received a call from Kerry on Thursday, I had a blown head gasket that was blown for a while he said. I had spit a shim and the valve hit the top of the piston. The cost to fix this with new titanium retainers and new heavy duty springs and while we are at it new rings $1,000.00. There goes my lock up. Atleast the valve did not drop and destroy more.

Consider it good luck, not bad! Could have been a lot worse! Question- where is it that you live that enables you to drive to Rockingham AND Schnitz Racing? Last time I looked at a map, they were pretty far apart!

Ed, do you have NOS? Did you spray the bike on that pass?

and yes, he does have NOS, but I'm just not sure if he used the NOS on his first T&T pass down there.
IT'S A GOOD THING he shut that puppy off at the end, or it sounds (from the likes of others' stories) that he certainly would have caused big damage by riding it back to the pits!
Hey Ed, care to break down that $1000? Not to impose, but I'm just curious how the costs break-out.......

I think we all have enough proof now with valve floating nos on the 12,I haven't heard of one person's bike leaning out,or detonating, just this problem, hopefully the better springs will fix it.Ed,I had a 1270 motor in my other bike and it blew a head gasket too.I had a single nozzle dry kit on it too,it lasted a few weeks with the gasket leaking, but ended up washing my bearings(trashed the crank),be sure your bottom end is ok,mine wasn't.

With my bike, it was the STOCK exhaust valves & springs that floated & hit the #3 piston crown. Was never really sure if it was the valves floating or the automatic cam chain tensioner that caused the problem. I am using all Kibblewhite stainless steel valves now. Oh, I never used NOS on my bike either. It was a 1290 when it kaboomed.

Craig Hansen of flo-tec did my bike. I believe he said there was .045 clearance. Compression was about 13:1. I cold checked the cranking pressure, all cylinders were between 220 & 230 Lbs. Hot cranking was sometimes a problem until I installed a FBG battery, then no problem. It was a big pain in the butt making the battery fit though.
