- BIG Studs -

Installed on Racheal's new Busa/Turbo motor:

Oversize ARP studs. Man, those are some stout cylinder studs.

They are beefy for sure. I think the torque spec on those bad boys is like 100+ lb-ft.

Is Steve doing the motor for you? That sure looks like his garage. If he is it will be bulletproof when he's done.

Yes, Steve did the motor. Now if we hit the lottery we can afford a big enough turbo to make some real power.

Yep, everything. Motor also has main studs. Should last a very long time with our current turbo setup.

After her crash last year, when it was running upon arrival (after a 1300' slide), I wanted it checked out. All of the bearings were mint upon inspection. But I figured it was a good time to make it a solid platform. I never liked the idea of running close to 300 hp on the stock rods.

How often do you remove your cylinder studs? 13mm has always worked for me...but in this case, I am not too worried about it. I hope to leave the assembly intact.

What kind of HP do you plan on setting this motor up for?

It depends on the turbo. Right now we can't afford to put more than about 325 hp to it...but should hold 600 hp or whatever...if we could afford it.

I'm glad this thread was not NSFW...

Shane I did a bunch of shopping when I upgraded the turbo on the 10, I'm happy with my billet wheel Precision journal bearing turbo for reasonable $. If you are careful you can find some deals on ebay as well.

Dean, do you have a link to a similar Turbo? I am not very knowledgeable about Turbos. The decent units seem to be $1400 and up?

Here's the unit I bought, I got it for $850 at the time, 900 now. Precision makes very reliable turbos, they have a lot of racing programs, including Rickey Gadson. For a journal-bearing turbo, they are hard to beat IMO. The new billet wheel Precision turbos (like my 6262) are very efficient.

Journal (plain) bearing turbos spool a little slower, maybe 500rpm max, but are tougher, and the center sections can be rebuilt. If you hurt a ball bearing turbo, it's done.

That's a common misconception, journal bearings don't spool at a lower rpm, but they do have a little less reaction time coming on to boost at higher rpms....... there was some very good documented evidence of this on supraforums.com
Let me see if I can find it.

Look at it this way, Borg Warner doesn't even make ball bearing turbos because they haven't seen any benefit from them, plus they are costly to build/buy, and they don't provide any better reliability. For LSR, buy the journal.

6262 billet is an EXCELLENT turbo btw!

a while ago i rebuilt a centrifugal blower on a Z-1 based bike and they were ceramic and real pricey. i am betting the journal setup has more longevity over a ball bearing setup.
