Small bolt fell into combustion chamber
I was removing my secondary butterflies on my 07 zx14 after putting on my new alien head exhaust and powercomander and dropped one of those tiny screws into the engine.. It figures the intake valve would be open on the cylinder it fell into. Any idea's on getting this out with out pulling the head off>? I fished around with a magnet thru the plug whole yesterday but am gonna try to find a small magnet today.. any suggestions would be appreciated! thanks

Maybe a small shop vacuum could suck it out if held to the stack. If you try this, I would certainly open up the vacuum to see if I indeed got it.

That sucks and not to rub salt on it but I want to make sure I am right. The screw fell down onto the primary set of flies and at that point you turned the throttle?

If you can't catch it with a magnet on a string, try slowly turning the crank with a wrench to bring the piston closer to TDC. If you are lucky the cylinder is on the exhaust stroke

I'd lean towards
1. put a sm magnet on a wire, poke it down the spark plug hole
or
2. put compressed air down one int valve(plug off the other and try to blow it out the spark plug hole

i actually would think the mag on a string with the piston all the way down that way the angle the mag has to flop is not as much reaching in will not be so great. to high and you may not get the mag to the side of the boor.
good luck.

if the string don't work.
put the bike on rear stand..pull the front mounts, the top rear mount and take the chain off the rear sproket.
tilt the motor forward and use a telescope magnet to fish it out the spark plug hole.
roll the motor back into position and hook everything up.

I would use Safety Wire which I had a little more control over and could really tie the magnet on to the wire! You surely do not need to be looking for the Magnet also! Even stainless screws have some attraction to a Magnet! I actually test the screws I use fo rthe Ber Stacks just to make sure they all have can be retrieved with a Magnet!
Good Luck!

Are you absolutly sure that is where the screw fell? Do you know a plumber? They have those little camera's on the end of a wire that they put down pipes tp look around. If you could get your hands on one of those then you could see exactly where it is and what is needed to retrieve it. In my world nothing ever lands where I thought it fell.

I"m positive the screw fell in, i seen it thru the intake valve sitting on top of the piston... I"m gonna pull the engine out this week or this weekend and hopefully i can get a better angle with a magnet thru the plug whole.. if that doesn't work I guess i'll be pulling the head off and grab the screw off the top of the piston.. if anyone has any advice or tips on anything to replace once the motors out please let me know.. aftermarket cam chain tensioner, aftermarket head gasket? let me know and thanks!

If the screw's not magnetic, you can use some thick grease on the end of a piece of bailing wire or a stick to grab the screw. You can get a fiber optic bore scope to view the cylinder, as Brenda suggested, for about $100.

Craftsman has a 2pc telescopic stick magnet set that one of the magnets measures 7.5 mm diameter. You can fish that down into the plug hole to get that screw without pulling the motor.

pulled the motor today and it took about 5 minutes of sticking a magnet straight down the plug hole and rocking it back and forth.. the small screw is finally out! while the motor is out i noticed a crack in the weld at the bottom of the frame right below the lowest engine mount bolt.. Gonna grind it out and weld it again since it's apart, actually my neighbor who is a retired welder out of a fabrication shop is gonna weld it for me since i have more faith in him then myself with it.. hopefully i'll be up and rolling by midweek if i get enough freetime to throw it back together.. thanks for all the tips and advice!

I think that crack in the frame is a factory recall...you may want to look into that!!

Unless you are "Mostly" racing this bike, the stock in fine. The only problem with the stock ones is when the chain has stretched a little and you are between Notches! sometimes you can hear the chain and there is Nothing you can do until the chain stretches a little more.
If you ever find that you need a manual tensioner I have a couple left that are long like the stocks tensioners for stability and strength, use the same "0" RIng and have a stainless very fine thread adjustment bolt.
Also, once you had the engine out, all you had to do was turn it USD and the Bole would have fallen out!
