Not the machine work. I will be doing assembly. Man it feels good building motors again.
I purchased an engine stand from Harbor Freight. I know others seem to really like it but I have decided to go another route. I stole an idea from a car guy friend who built an engine stand using a car hub and spindle. His stand easily rotates a big block Chevy motor rock solid. His stand uses a disc brake rotor as a positioning device.
Hey, I have a couple of weeks before the parts get back from the machine shop. What the hell.

Randy, didn't you just put rods in that motor?
If you are stroking it you will need shorter ones, true?
Let me know if you are getting rid of the stock length ones.

Pistons are available that use stock length rods. I will have a +2 piston set for 1mm os valves if you are interested.

I spoke with tech support at NGK yesterday to see what they thought of the plug. Their determination was pre-ignition. I know most of you guys know the difference between pre-ignition and detonation but figured it would not hurt to cover the subject.
Pre-ignition occurs when there is a hot spot in the engine which causes the fuel/air mixture to ignite prematurely. The telltale sign is an eroded electrode.
Detonation occurs when the fuel/air mixture ignites prematurely or burns unevenly due to too much ignition advance, too lean an AFR or design. By design only happens in diesels.
Once way to improve high speed performance (at a possible slight loss of drivability at low RPM) is to use semi-surface discharge plugs. Surface and semi-surface discharge firing tips are less sensitive to voltage requirement increases due to gap growth (wear). Note the concave cut on the ground electrodes for even Gap growth (wear). In addition, this type of construction aids in burning away the carbon which can act as a bridge between the center electrode and plug shell. This bridging can cause plug misfire.
The problem with semi-surface discharge plugs is the ignition spark is not inserted as far into the combustion chamber, hence the possibility of low RPM drivability issues. NGK stated that the low RPM drivability issues usually did not make themselves known in modern engines with efficient combustion chamber designs.
