TDC off the crank sensor
Has anyone checked the sensor when they degreed their cams to see how close it was? I'm just wondering if it is like the swingarm and not very accurate.

I wouldn't reccomend it unless you first verify that it is really T.D.C. before doing so you should determine absolute top dead center first. with a dial indicator or piston stop inserted in the spark plug hole. Absolute T.D.C. is the spot right in between where the piston has come to a stop. You take a reading where it comes up and stops but the crank still rotates just a little before starting to come down. Write that measurement down then divide it in half and that is true T.D.C. That little dead spot where the piston stops and the crank doesn't. That is where the connecting rod is changing directions. Then you can mark the Ignition rotor and have a true T.D.C. alignment mark from now on. At least that is how it was explained to me.Correct me if this is misleading. Thanks.

Pete, I'm not sure what you mean by how "close" it is. How close it is to what?
Its an electronic signal like a sine wave and the computer has a threshold or "trigger" point in the rise of the wave created by the sensor. So the physical location doesn't mean anything. Its mute. You wouldn't know when the actual trigger happens anyway unless you ran the engine with the side cover off and used a timing light "strobe" to look at it. Even if you did know the trigger point its irrelevant.
What are you actually trying to check, measure, or know?

If you're trying to find TDC for valve degreeing,
using that make will be close, but not exact.
Remember a couple degrees the wrong way equals boom.

I'm not trying to do anything. When I was checking the valves, you have to align the crank sensor mark with the casing split.Curiosity got me wondering that when the degree wheel was on,did anyone check those marks.Sure once the wheel is on,you might as well do the job right, but doesn't the accuracy of the sensor position affect timing?Just wondering is all.

when i set the degree wheel up i put the mark on the ign wheel v close to the split in the cases, tighten down the wheel, and then use a positive stop to find TDC and bend the indicator wire to point at zero.
Often the wire requires very little bending.

Im suprised you dont stick the DI down onto the piston? after making a pos stop out of a bolt and an old plug, i prefer the DI

i tried the DI, didn't like it with my peaked pistons.
