NOX, you are exactly on the money about holding the upper case solidly all by it self without the foxture getting in the way of putting the lower case on.

I had a custom built rig designed to do exactly that, and i still hated it's general "woggly-niness, especially when doing stuff like setting the cam CL's.

I put my HF stand on the curb for the night people after getting frustrated

I betcha osr has come up with something better

Seems like an awful lot of weight on those two upper engine mounts especially when rotating the engine

Here is a pic of a zx14 stand -- we just pulled a motor out of it - i will have pics with motor in stand in a few days when we get the next bullet up in it.

The 2nd pic is of a similar design with an r1 motor in it.

the 14 was built for the 14-- the r1 was built for something else and then adapted to fit the r1.

we have them for the kz, zx6, gsxr1000 and 600, r6, -- just about all motors. and have used them this way for years -- right side up, upside down, sideways etc...

Just make a well supported or gusseted plate that you can bolt to the breather surface of the topcase (photo of mine in above post). Works great in nay direction and so that the lower case (& motor mounts) can be removed when engine is inverted and still turned back over with just the upper case attached, and it's very tight and secure if built well.

I made a head for my engine stand very similar to this one Todd made. It uses a flat plate and a strut that mounts off of the upper balancer cover like in this picture.

You can rotate the engine etc with just the upper crankcase half on the stand. This allows you to have it upside down on the engine stand to put the crank and pistons in. then drop the lower crankcase half on it and flip it to put the top end on.

When you make it, make sure you locate the swivel point close to the center of mass so its somewhat neutral when rotating the engine. This will prevent a rapid "swing down" .
