I envy you guys. I wanted to build a bigger shop but just didn't have any extra room.
It's 5 x 10 Metres with a shitter and a shower and I do have enough room left for the Beer cooler.
I just recently got the rest of my stuff shipped from the states so I've been busy getting the tools sorted and more lighting of course.
I do want to put a single bike lift in. What company makes that double lift?

And put up plenty of lights! Our eyes ain't getting any younger Karl.
I finished my shop before I retired over 4 years years ago, when we're home this is where you'll find me.
You won't need a large "joist", I got a Harbor Freight rated at 440 pounds single line and 880 double line. For bikes it's ideal and it sure don't cost much.
Dan
NICE "garage", Dan!!!
I am with you about lights.
The builder is putting in 15 x dual bulb, 48" fluorescent fixtures over "my" part of the garage.
Russell the construction mgr: "i've never put this many lights in a garage, I like it"
My wife's car section gets 1 x 60W bulb.
And, I am with you about the HF hoist; I've had mine since 2001, love it for forks, front wheel R&R, changing swingarms, etc. Paid $70? for it, still works great, maybe leaking a drop of oil now & then.
One thing I am doing different than yr workspace is insulation; entire garage will be insulated just like the house, with 2"(thickest available) insulated garage door. The builder will not install AC in the garage, something about taxable living space, so I will need to add an AC unit after construction.

Karl the joist are the 2x6's that span the ceiling.
Dan's right you don't really need the steel
across several joists, but it would allow you to
spread wieght out over a larger area. That
would be helpful to keep the drywall from cracking
The popular method of straightening and strengthening
across the joist is a hardback. It's just a box made
of 2x6's that span across the top of the ceiling joist...
It's something that's much easier to do now than after.
I'm sure they have allready done this somewhere in the
garage....
My shack was built in 76 and it doesn't
appear that they thought about anything but the bare
essentials. I think it should be a part of the code to
require 220 outlet and 120 duplex plugs on every wall.

hey Michael,
I am getting plenty of 120V outlets, and a 50A 240V outlet which will drive the AC unit to cool the garage.
I see what you mean about the joists and the point where I will hang the hoist.
Thanks!

When is the House/Garage warming party?
Looks like there is room for a stand up trailer as well.
hey Gary,
this has been in the works since Oct. My Oldtimer's afflicted MIL lives upstairs and she is having increasing difficulty in navigating stairs; time for a smaller, 1 floor house.
Also time time for a bigger AC's garage; what a coincidence!
Yup, plenty of room for a Kendon stand up trailer just like yrs, what a coincidence.

Thanks Carl,
Yea, I built em myself. A bit overkill, but that's just the way I do things. 13 mm plate and they're bolted to the floor. Next thing is to get a bike lift, hope to find one that will fit under the benches when I'm not using it.

Karl,
I added the area in the photo several years ago, I had a 28' deep by 24' wide separate garage then built on another 20' wide shop. The left and right walls are insulated but have never got around to finishing the ceiling or back wall. Never enough time once you retire!
Not to hijack your thread but since it's winter time and most of us are huddled in the shops, how 'bout everyone posting up some pictures where you work out of.
I'm liking Bigbores place for sure! It may motivate me to finish my walls & prime and paint them white for the added light.
Let's see them shops / garages.

BB4,
i wish you'd come to Texas and build me some overkill.
IMO don't worry about "hiding" the lift when not in use, it'll always be in use, and when it doesn't have a bike on it, use it as bench space.
What are you doing in Thailand?

awesome garages! I might be helping a buddy of mine build a garage next summer. should be a fun project. it will be for his roommates dad. I think the plan is to include a bar and pool table. unsure about any cars.
I just work in dads shop right now. 40x60x20. originally built for the giant forestry equipment he runs, but Im doing my best to convert it to a bike shop . the problem is all our relatives use it as a storage shed so half the floor space is lost . Hoping to build a loft or U shaped platform to get back the floor space and still be able to drive the big stuff in

Bawls.....Ive had the camaro since 78......drove it till 94....Im waiting on my son to get out of school
and for him to get his stuff together......but if hes like his Dad ....we're in for a long wait.
I spend more time being "Dad" than Pawpaw. Im trying to get that cleared up with my daughter....
I dont regret the time I spend with my grandson, but it has turned out that I spend the majority
of my time with him....I need a little time to do my thing too.
I had considered taking him to the mile....but hes still in diapers....just to much
to do and try to enjoy being in the company of some of the best people I know....
