Osti gift: now i need a couple hundred pounds of depleted uranium
Thanks a million to Osti for sending me an early Xmas gift; a stock length arm for my heap.
You are DA MAN, Ryan!!!
The experts say that for Bonneville the optimum amount of weight over the rear wheel is "more".
Now i gotta figure how to add a buncha weight to it, just filling it w/lead is only a starting point.
hmmmmmm...

Lead/steel blocks can be attatched to the out side as well, just not past the axle.
But the real secret..........................................
More Tex-Mex and BBQ!
Seriously, talk to Seldom Seen Slim, he has run his ZX-12 out there for years.

nice!
maybe get it under braced too Karl, use extra big tubing and fill that with molten lead also. gives you places to bolt big pieces of weight
im suprised you didnt opt for a custom solid cast iron swingarm, painted to look factory

Ask SSS about leathers as well, I think yours will pass. as long as you don't have textile expansion joints. If you do just post up on the SSS site and they can suggest people to sent it to to have any textile areas covered with leather.

If you look at a picture of Guy's tiger bike, you'll see an extension of the fairing all the way back and attached to the swingarm. He said he gets an extra 4mph with this mod.I suppose one could make it out of thicker heavier metal to add weight.

I wouldnt think there would be need for one with a stock WB bike. the tiger is longer than my bike
Karl, are you fitting a stock tail now?

for now i am keeping the 6" ext tail, but may go back to stock tail with the stock arm.
In any event i will stay at 6 over arm for asphalt LSR events; Osti & I both tried stock arms on asphalt and we won't do that again, no!

hey Dan,
good on yr brother and his source of DU!!!!!!!
Ryan is definitely a standup guy, FREE ARM!!!! Woo-hoo!!!
I have the feeling that this free gift is going to end up costing me just a bit, but how much could a lil trip to the salt cost?
My event all-in estimate to my wife is "about $300".
(think that'll cover it?)

Karl, I don’t know where the average guy can get depleted uranium, but lead and tungsten are available. If you are really tight on space, tungsten is the way to go, but it is difficult to cut and costs about 20x as much as lead per pound.
I compiled a list of ballast materials and other metals commonly found on bikes for comparison.
Density in pounds per cubic inch
Magnesium _______.06
Aluminum ________ .10
Titanium _________ .16
Cast Iron _________ .26
Steel ____________ .28
Stainless Steel ____ .29
Lead ____________ .41
Depleted Uranium __ .69
Tungsten _________ .70
Not sure where TexMex or turkey would go on this list

Karl,
The extra thrust the beans give ya might put you into the blown class!
Just make sure you get reservations early for Bonneville. When we went out there three years ago we stayed at the Rainbow Casino (don't get any ideas!) in Wendover and luckily we made reservations six months early or we may have been sleeping in the truck.

I have heard... that some Marine race shops use Tungston in their cranks and when they take a balancing weight out... they do not re-use it.... so just an idea of a place to find tungston...
I am not 100% but it would not hurt to make a couple of phone calls.. and you probably have a marnine shop or two down there...

Karl,
Glad it got there in one piece.
I'm glad you can get some use out of it. It was just collecting dust here anyway. It won't look very nice after you run it on the salt. It will be good that you don't have to take your nice Trac arm out there.

tungsten it EASY to get..
go to a welding shop!! comes in 7" lengths.. a lil pricey.. you can buy the off-brand tho for like $15 for 10 sticks of it. red is 100% tungsten.. green is 2% thoriated (radioactive, to make up for the DU..)
or, gather about 250,000 light bulbs and harvest he filaments out of them...

The most common material for balancing cranks is popularly known as "Mallory Metal" it is a tungsten-steel alloy, cheaper than pure W but much cheaper.
Karl, start with filling the swingarm with lead. My stock length arm for my 12 weighs 40 lbs. There are plenty of places for lead. On the Muz Drag ZX-10 that RG broke records with, we had a large dia. tube across the front of the engine behind the pipes that was REAL heavy. The axles need not be hollow..., etc. Stock wheels,...

Use small shot to fill the arm.You have to drill at least three holes. One in each leg and one on the top of the center casting. It takes a while. Oh, and don't spill...... big headache.

For small chunk sizes of lead you can go to a diving shop. It will have slots in it for the divers belt which makes it easy to strap on a bike in various locations.

after you fill the swing arm with lead could;t you get a longer rear Axel made and hang weight off of it? I don;t know if that is allowed but that could help. just like this
