the clutch dr was right

check out these steels. one full season of drag racing with a lock up

looks like junk right? nope! perfectly flat!

VERY strange colour/pattern, but Nox has said colour means nothing as long as they arent warped. they slid off the hub just like new ones. as we all know thick plates are less likey to be hurt by slipping the clutch, and this pack prooves it. i had 2 steels together acting as one thick steel to bring the stack height to where it should be. i dont need to point out which ones :P
I had made a few passes after taking too much spring pressure out (and addingballast)and it was slipping too much in the first 15 feet or so. I think this was when i coloured my steels they are going back in for next season

Scott-are you also using the 2 spring steels as in the stock clutch setup? Plates look fine to use again-no worries about the colour, just if they are warped!

yup as per drs orders the anti chatter rings are in place
number of passes total? or number of " i know its slipping way too much" passes?
maybe 150 and 4-5 respectively. fyi mid season the steels looked normal.

as long as they are flat you are fine. not sure where you got 1.8s tho 1.6=stock, 2.0= muzzy
stack height. a bit higher than normal in order to make the clearance for the lock up arms to be correct.

The rainbow pattern is from thermal gradients. That color should Scotchbrite off pretty easily. You should probably do some kind of surface cleaning to remove any baked-on oil residue or friction materials that could affect engagement performance.

I dont even do anything to mine, except clean them real good with solvent, or wipe them down good. I want them smooth, no scratches from any paper, or scotchbrite, etc. that eats fibers.........., lock ups work off of pressure, not friction. With enough pressure, two pieces polished metal will lock up enough to drive a 500 lb bike down the track.

hmmmm maybe ill just clean them and leave the pretty colours then lol

Nox, you ever see a steel "bubble" outwards in the same place on both sides of the steel? (making it a lot thicker in one spot) guy with a short R1 had this happen on his whole pack all the way thru in the same place. he was slipping by hand and eats up a lot of clutches

that's because their bikes are TURDS and they have to ride them like a 600 lol. I guess that's why the R1 was voted best 600 of 2008 :P

hahaha reminds me of a quote, not sure where i heard it..." R1, the ultimate poser bike"
they just werent ment for the 1/4. especially stock length ones with tall gearing. thats hard on any clutch, especially if you lack low rpm grunt...rev it 10000 rpm, slip the clutch and run a 10.... 5 passes later "my clutch is acting up"

i learned sumthin.

all this time, i've been using "old" plates that look like that as homemade clutch tools.. stack 2 or 3 up, tack them together, weld a handle to them.. voila. clutch basket tool.

now, i now better.

Interesting.........

there is another way to remove the hub......., you have to remove the nut with all the plates still in...., if you do, you can hold it with your bare hand..............

i'm assuming that the surface tension of the oil binds the assembly then? very slick. (no pun..) sounds alot more easy than having to make specialty tools!
