wish me luck guys (off topic)

Im having surgery on my right shoulder bright and early wednesday morning to repair torn tendons. this will be the first operation on this one (hopefully the last). you may remember me mentioning my previous operations. i had the same thing done to my left shoulder but it took 2 operations to get to be where im happy with it. he had to drill holes in the bone to put staples into, then tie the tendons to the staple. im pretty sure thats what will happen to my right shoulder. its very loose in the socket, and i could literally pull it out if i wanted to. i have been putting off the surgery do to race season and just plain not wanting to go through it all again, but i dislocated my shoulder a couple weeks ago(in my sleep believe it or not) and im sick of having to recover from that. ive lost track of how many times ive had to put my shoulder back into the socket... my guess is 15 over the last 2.5 yrs. it had been fine for over 1.5 yrs as im very careful with overhead work, but its time to bite the bullet and get it fixed. im not looking forward to the painkillers. the last 2 times ive been prescribed morphine, which does its job and takes away the pain, but sometimes it makes me very itchy and uncomfortable, sometimes i get nervous and confused(other times i just giggle and think life is great im a dazed state of mind). also i find it very addicting, which means i have to stop taking it before my prescription runs out and switch to tylenol. thats no fun at all since im not getting the pain relief i need, and i feel kinda sick from going cold turkey off of morphine(makes me glad i spend my money on my bike and not drugs). does anyone have any expirience with similar post op drugs that would be easier on me? im going to ask my surgeon, but personal expiriences are allways good to hear.

REALLY sorry to hear that you are going under the knife. Been there, done that, and i know you are gonna be miserable for a bit. One day at a time. Send the morphine to me so you avoid the temptation, then go to something a bit less powerful, give yr body time to adjust to lower levels of narcotics.

Do I have any experience with drugs hmmmm?I didn't like the morphine as it only put me to sleep. They had me on Oxy's which are percosets without the tylenol.I spoke to the doctor about detoxing off of them and we came up with the plan of reducing the amount every three days.I went from 3 times a day to twice and then only once at night to help me sleep.Wasn't bad that way.I recommend having the wife hold on to the meds so you don't start self-proscribing yourself. They are very addictive and can zap any amount of money you thought was going to go for rent or bike parts and cause you to start hanging out in church basements on a regular bases once hooked. No one is immune. If you are feeling dazed state of mind or giggling from the painkillers then you are taking too much.I don't feel it is off topic as you will be able to come back and tell us how much if any it stops you from getting in a good tuck.Especially on the line where you start with your elbows elevated.Explaining this to the therapist will allow them to give you the necessary stretches to retain that movement.Good luck with the surgery!

thx a lot guys!
Karl, not too sure if we could get it through the mail. customs may have a problem with it lol
Pete, ill talk to my surgeon about the 3 day plan to see what he says. dont worry, i dont have to have someone hold onto meds for me, i have a lot of willpower, and have seen what drug abuse can do to people. im never going down that road. im addicted to speed right now... but im talking about my bike . strangely enough i would get mixed results from taking the same amount of the morphine. the times i got a good feeling from it was the same dosage as when i had a "bad hit". you are right, it definately affects my ability to get a good tuck, or at least it did on my left shoulder. its mainly do to lack of external rotation range of movement. i was able to get most that back after about 10 weeks and lots of physio. the problem was not being able to get my elbow to rotate down to touch the tank, but i have allmost 100% range of movement in my left shoulder now and it doesnt affect my tuck.

Morphine does not make the pain go away you just do not care! Hydrocodone Sort of like what you are talking about allows you to have your mind and reduces Nerve pain. I would take 2 in the moring and 2 at night and have a great day and easily went to 1 in the Morning and 1 at night then 1/2 at the same times then 1/2 at night and then none! never struggled!

Scott,
I got addicted to Oxycontin from 2 shoulder surgerys and a terrible motorcycle accident....The doctors put you on this stuff not thinking about the after effects when you have to stop.....Well anyways it wasn`t fun one little bit....They ended up putting me on Methadone(2in the am and 2 in the pm)....I don`t have the "high" feeling on this stuff,or the craving affect either....But I here the withdawals are pretty bad ...I don`t see this pain going away any time soon....47 years old and never broke a single bone up untill 43 years old, then bamm , a car pulls out in front of me going 45 mph...Tboned her and went flying....
Good luck with your surgery Scott.....I know your pain with the shoulder stuff...

i found it hard to believe that taking less than i was prescribed to, had me feeling that i had to have it.
really sucks about your accident Paul. some people should not be allowed to drive(the dumb woman who forgot to look being one of them)

i guess one of the good things that comes from this is that i will have lots of spare time to work on bikes and my truck over the next month or 2. i wont be very fast, but ill have lots of time to putter around doing small stuff with one hand. ill have the old man doing the big stuff on the bikes. dads is first on the list we got a cylinder head from Jackshow today (plz check email Jack, a couple things i want to get sorted out) and we are waiting for the block to come back from Lees. they can give us a much better rate to get a block bored out and replated than Millenium since they do so much work thru them. we are using my spare 1287 pistons and we gave instructions to not chamfer the bottom of the bores as we may get the spare (bad) crank made into a stroker depending on how things go this winter. I really want to build him a 1394.....

I hope the best for ya too! .........Just get some carbon fiber and some epoxy resin
and make you some parts....carbon fiber being light and all you could still work but it wont be heavy to lift as much as you have done , youll be fine and back at it in no time!
Cheers.......Michael

When I had my back sugery I was prescribed Hydrocodone as well. When I took it
on a regular basis after the first days out of the hospital it kept the pain away. As time
passed I took less and less. I didn't really have any withdrawl symptoms or feelings
of addiction. BUT, if you are not aware of this, excessive use of narcotics will cause
constipation like you wouldn't believe. Not a fun experience after having 2 bones
in your lower back fused. This is my personal account, I hope this helps. Think about
what you're going to do to your bike in the downtime. You'll heal quicker. I know I did.

you have that right CR lol. lazy boy + laptop + Bikeland = best recovery possible (hey Karl, nows the time for a new motor project to keep my mind occupied lol)
Ill be able to do some serious reading up about my new to me truck aswell. i got a 94 Dakota 4x4 slt with a 318 magnum v8. from early research, a 360 is a direct bolt in, and 408 stroker kits are on ebay......I started the process of fixing a bunch of rusted body panels and im also about halfway done a homemade 6 inch lift :P
hmmm make my own CF parts? i may look into that if materials are reasonably priced. ive done a bit of work with fiberglass, it cant be that much different. besides the baking part i think....

KZ,
I have something more fun than a new build, i.e. finding my hp that went on vacation and never showed back up in the office.

After all external possibilities have been eliminated, I will tear down & rebuild with microscopic attention to detail and macroscopic attention to advice from TChin, Y2K, DarkFalcon, DougMeyer, Petrik, Cheese, Andy, Osti, Mike, KZ, Sal, and anyone else who has thoughts. Too bad DaveO doesn't answer his phone no-mo

Anyone know how to use an O-Scope? I have one which DaveO rec'd but don't know how to use it. I want to test injectors, coils, all sensors.

Hey guys, made it out alive Im doing well, on lots of painkillers and regular ice packs. Im on hydromorphone and it is much better than the morphine. they had me on morphine when i was recovering directly after surgery and again it made me itch very badly. mostly my nose. but im much better off now. no confusion, and only one case of nausea that made me throw up (my fault, i tried to move too fast).
so what did my surgeon do to me? well once under and my body was fully relaxed, he was able to pop my shoulder out with his thumb. loose fit or what? apparently the tendons on the back of the joint had been totally ripped off of the bone, and i had been keeping it in place with just flexing muscles for the last couple yrs. he reattached the torn tendons with 4 anchors drilled into the bone, so it should be solid when healed, allthough it does take bone a long time to heal.
ill be off work for quite awhile (carpentry) and i have tons of ideas for the bikes and my truck, but very little funds since ill have limited income during my down time. i did sell my extensions for my bike, so a built arm will be on order later on this winter. Im looking pretty heavily towards having my arm modified by spencer cycles. 4-12 over with underbracing should allow me to crack the low 1.4 60s i want.
first up tho as i previously stated is dads bike. its turning into a headache allready. pun intended. details to follow....

Icarus, yes im aware of the possible bowl problems. my solution is to make fruit-yogurt smoothies. about a cup of yr fav yogurt, big hanful of frozen strawberries, some frozen peaches, pineapple and mellon. lots of sugar(very important lol) and top it off with milk. blend it up and enjoy. vary the milk for different thickess. whatever you prefer, it can be runny or like a milkshake. stewed blueberries work wonders too

Karl, ill be wiating patiently for progress. ive done some of my best learning from your highly detailed threads
