Yeah the 12 had a very limited budget.
Base gasket removal was a cheap way to bump compression....tube of Yamabond.
I degreed the stock cams to 105/100 per Muzzy before he later changed to 105/105. Had to buy adj. sprockets.
While the head was off I simply cleaned up the rough castings & matched the intake boots, no cost but a little time.
Bears stacks were donated....what a deal!
Muzzy timing advancer, about $50 back then.
K&N filters, about 75 bucks.
Akropovic SS & carbon pipe, around a grand.
0w/10 fully synthetic oil, 20 buxs.
Slight tailwind......priceless.
Dan

Thanks for the compliment on the 12 Phantom, I still think it's a better looking bike than my 14.

Scott,
It was Maxima Maxum.

The one event I used it me and the boys made 7 or 8 passes each, something like 20+ miles at WOT.
That was over 20,000 miles ago with no ill effects showing up on the old 12.

Best of luck on the surgery, don't get too impatient and listen to the doctors.
Here's hoping a quick recovery for you.

thx Dan
great pics Sal, hopefully you show us some "after" pics
i was suprised as to how bad the intake boots lined up on my 12 aswell. you would think they could put a bit more quality into the build from the factory seeing how competitive the marketing is for the bike with the most hp. they used to do a clean up on all the factory gpz750s back in the day i believe.
(oh what are you working on in the background? a straight 6 or a v12?)

Yes the boots are very badly matched.
The head in the backround is from an import to be specific a SKYLINE
I do the porting on those also for a couple of shops.

lol, I loved the "priceless" line! Maxton can be a generous track indeed.

I agree, the 12R is a much better looking bike than the 14 IMHO. There's just something about the 12R styling.... hard to put my finger on it. All I know is that I sometimes catch myself just staring and admiring it..... even after 5 years of ownership. I don't see myself getting rid of it, ever.

Mike,
your 12 is soooooooooo "personalized/Phantom-ized", I can fully understand you wanting to keep it forever.

BTW: I stand with you on prefering the 12's looks over the 14. Great bike, the 14, I just prefer the 12.

Entropy - LMFAO!!! Yes, right now all the moola is in performance, but I'm done with that portion of the my neverending project, now it's all asthetics and purdyfication. I promise, the next time you see my bike it will look as good as it runs. Maybe then I'll be able to shake off the "Junkyard Dog" moniker! lol

Halvefast- haha, nice picture! I don't think you could have found a less aerodynamic 12r to park next to! =) Sure the 12R is tall in stock trim, but there are ways of getting her low and slippery. Now if I can only figure out how to clean up the rats nest Kawasaki calls a wiring harness... then I'll have it made!

Congrats on your new project! looking forward to reading the results. While not my skill set or profession my true passion has always been in modifications. Reading, researching all across the range of motor sports looking for new stuff (too em anyway) thank god for teh internet! My book budget is shot!

It is amazing what technology we have now stock. oem motorcycles and can improve upon.

Now what i'm really looking forward too is the new V-max motor -when someone starts tweaking and more importantly what the 'other" oem will spin off in larger displacements/engine configurations

Anyway best of luck!

I will find out if he evere had it on a dyno ?
My buddy has a dyno just maybe we can get it on ther using pump gas.
Down here where I am at they run 188-189 mph I have also seen
mid 180's with guys using INTERNET maps from various shops.
As soon as I get the bike dialed in I will know what the complete stage 1 package
was worth I am hoping to go right at 200 MPH

Yup he did it back in 2006 when the bike first came out ..
With what the Ice Man is doing to that zx14 200 MPH shouldn't be that hard ..A good light weight jocky with skills no problem , a big guy with no skills BIG problem ..

The Head is done !
I measured the Factory pro velocity stacks at the bottom where the mount to the
back of the throttle bodie and up at the top where the bellmouth is and guess what ??
They are the same exact diameter !
The ZX14 head is not exactly a good design in my opinion so I made some changes
actually a few on the intake and exhaust, I want this bike together so I can start tuning
and see what it has with this head.
But I have ran into other issues on the bike from the factory that is noy exeptable
little things that need to be slightly modified.
Monday the head goes on and cams degreed Tuesday the bike should be ready to go.

Here are the TB 's with the factory pro stacks.
They do not match up tp good so thats one of the things I also had to fix.
I will do a back to back test against the stock stacks.
