180/55 USOFT
Who has used one, and what did it compare to the 190. Saw one on a 5.5 inch rim this weekend......., thinkin my 6 inch rim would really spread it out, and make it have a better contact patch than the 190 I am running.........
Serious comments.
this bike just did a 3.78 330, with the shift light set 700 rpms low.........., it has to hook, I am just looking for every edge, without buying a 250 dollar tire.

I have used both, but not on any bikes near the length of yours. The 180 worked very well on a Gixxer 1000 at 63". I recently switched that bike over to a 180/55 Supercorsa SC2, and it hooks very well also. The Supercorsa is a $50 race take-off.
Even though it is contrary to what I was told, the 180 seemed more crowned than the 190. Perhaps because it is taller? With the low tire pressure you are running I can't imagine that being an issue. I have run the 190 on my 12 and 14, and it appears to spread out flatter...but this may change when the bike squats...although based on what the tire looks like after a run, it supports the 190 laying a wider track. This is just my observation...ymmv.
Also, keep in mind that my 60' times are 1.5-1.6 range...so I am not as demanding on the tire as you are.
I have heard that the Power Race tires hook extremely well, and you can get a good deal on take-offs also.

I have no issues with the 190. , obviously with the times I am running....., thinking that 3.78 could have been 3.77 , and transfer more et at the top end of the track.......
Just looking for maybe a hair lighter tire........., and thinking it might do it.....
What I saw with this 180, was it was pretty flat on the 5.5, about the same profile as my 190 on a 6 inch rim.......
So, the thinking is......, to stretch out the 180. What wheel width did you have on the 1000?

It is the 6" rim on the 1000. I also run 18 psi, so it might make it balloon up a bit.
Did you weigh the two? If you want lighter, why not try the take-off Power Race? It will be about 3 lbs. lighter than the Shinko.

thats what I am going to check out...........
I am getting his tire, and compare it to my 190. If there is not much difference, I wont chance it........
the Power race is expensive. If I am going to spend that, I will buy an MCR like I used to.
Do you have any photos of the shinko mounted on that rim?
Thanks for the input.

Nothing close-up (at least not that I can access from work today), looks pretty wide and flat (enlarge the area of the picture) in this photo....

Oh, I can go 1.3s with that........., I like the looks of that........
I am going to weigh the two, and see what can be gained. It won't be much, but you would be surprized on what a tire size change will do to the front. I lost 2 lbs on a front tire.......
thanks btw.
any more would be appreciated also.

I've run nothing but 180-55 on my 69" ZX-14, both Shinko's and Michelin Power's, and absolutely no spinning on either one and a best of 1.33 60' on the Shinko. The Michelin costs more, but last just as long as the Shinko and sticks like glue.

What exact Michelin (compound) are you using? Do you see a mph difference between the Shinko and Michelin?

Yes both measured on a 6" rim. Not a major difference but it was at least a 1/2" wider traction patch.

With how much air?
I know the tires are almost exactly 1/2 inch difference......., if you measure with a flexible tape, from tip of tread to tip of tread, but I am only using about 6.5 inches of the 190........, at
the **lbs that I run.

Nox, I was running the 'soft' compound on the Michelin Power Race, and the U-soft on the Shinko. I was able to run a higher pressure with the Michelin, 12-20 psi with the Michelin compared to 9-12 psi with the Shinko.
Didn't see any MPH differences when I went from Shinko to Michelin, but I did go up one more tooth on the rear sprocket with the Michelin. As good as the Michelin hooks, it was strange to see that I get my best 60' times with the Shinko. The Michelin would bog the bike it would hook so good. The Shinko seemed to 'give' just good enough to keep the rev's up on the launch.
Never tried a 180 on my ZX-12.

Interesting observation above. When I put the Supercorsa on the Gixxer (had been running a U-Soft) it seemed to hook more violently and I had to be a little easier with the launch. The bike wheelied on the first 3 attempts, and it rarely has ever done that in the past. The 60' came to be the same eventually, but I had to ride the bike differently.
I wasn't sure if it was the clutch, since the bke had been sitting a few weeks...I thought maybe the plates were dry or something like that. Or maybe being used to the 14. But maybe it was just the tire?
I know it's a little off topic, but does this sound like a tire change issue?

The Shinko weighs 14lbs. The Michelin PR3 weighs 11lbs. from the reduced rotaional weight you should pick up at least 2mph

I have the "Dr. Nox" clutch set up. No bogs here, my bike goes from 7,000 to 11,000, and stays there until the shift spike......., just wanting to truck harder at the top of the track, and gain a hair.
Again, all good info guys, thanks

Could have been a clutch issue...........
There are lots of tiny things that affect clutches, that most people do not pay that much attention to, that makes them do things like that , but they never think of it.........

Well, a 180 shinko, wore out weighs ......., about 2.5 to 3 lbs more than a wore out MCR.
I am betting when I take my 190 shinko off, there will not be much difference in the 180 and 190. If so, I will be nabbing a MCR for the end of the year, to try for my quickest passes yet.
I am changing nothing before my next race, as all I have changed since my last outing is the oil. The new AMSOIL Dominator. All testing has shown it makes more power than the normal amsoil i was running.
I changed the oil, after bolting on a new fox shok. Went my fastest time yet.........
