WHEELIE SHIFT?
So I heard Rickey Gadson say that when your front starts coming up, its your bikes way of telling you to shift. On my XX, once I got out of the initial takeoff, I didn't have to worry about it too much. With my new 14, it's a little different. He's not saying that if I'm in 1st gear at, say 8000, and the wheel is coming up to go ahead and shift is he?

Yep. If the front end is coming up, shift into the next gear while staying wide open. Hopefully the front will drop down with the taller gearing, and you won't have to lift the throttle.
This is assuming that your gearing, clutch and chassis are already set up as best as you can get it.

smoke,
shifting in 1st when the front is getting too high is real good advice, but doing this footshifting can be real tricky. You have a button shifter?

we call it short shifting, your e/t will drop off if you short shift but the run will be better than letting off the gas.
Your best e/t will be rapping out every single gear.
In bracket racing those little things will make or break you, wheeie and you lose, spin the tire and you lose, miss a gear and you lose.

Thanks for the info. Very useful. My setup at this point is just a plain ol' 2008 ZX-14 with a BMC filter in it. Just did your typical light to light or backwoods road kind of thing with the XX, but plan on going to the track and having a little more controlled fun with the zed. I'm sure I'll add on a little on down the line. I'm 6'4" and 230lbs, so I realize this will hurt my times, but it never hurts to get the opinions of some "in the know". At this point, while practicing, I have been running about 6-8 grand and feathering the clutch out. As for you zx12mark, I'm glad that you are so well versed in all things life has to offer so as to not ever have to ask questions. Good for you, my man.

it would not matter to alot of you guys if you were handed the brass ring.you still don`t have the guts or the talent to run these bikes wide open throttle on the back tire bangin red line in every gear if thats what it takes to get down the track.it`s self explanatory. just learn how to do it.no one can teach you.

Entropy and other cool cats, I did go to the track for the first time on Friday. Like I said, I'm 230 butt nekkid, and it was in the mid 90's and very humid. I ran about 10 times and was usually posting 10.7's and 10.8's. My reaction times were fantastic, but my 60's were sucking at about 1.8. Guess I just couldn't make myself roll on that beef any quicker just yet. Some thought that this track red lighted if your r/t was quicker than .05 which I was doing quite a bit. They say to go at the last yellow, and I was, so some said to back up in the box a little once you set off the second yellow stage. Also, my last run was against a gixxer 1000 who had beaten me earlier. I got him at the line and he said I had him by about 3 bike lengths. Ticket came back with him at 10.44 and me at 10.8. He said that was obviously screwed. Oh well...Practice, practice.

But your weight helps you for sure. And also there are people at gateway that can hand you your ass on a short bike. If you dont believe me about the weight strap 60lbs on your back and see how fast you are. Ill see ya at the track. By the way i finally ran in the 8s. I asked alot of questions to get there.

well rick i don`t lie.i call it like i see it just like your doing it right now.i don`t make excuses for anything. i state the facts the best i can.racing motorcycles is dangerous.if a person dose not have enough sense to figure the basic fundamentals by trying on their own then they should not be fucking going a 140 in 10 seconds.i see this kind of shit posted all the time.this is my way of getting these guys to think alot more at what they are doing.you know as well as i that we all have lots of fun talkin shit at the track and on here.there has been times over there that i thought one of those black guys was gonna get shot.their fucking nuts sometimes.i`m not into that killin shit. if somebody on here replied to one of my post by saying i should sell my bike i would say o.k. but first i`m gonna ride it up their ass.that would get them laughing then we would go on to the next insult.you guys need to hang out on labusas for some real fun. i`m an amateur as you are.who are you going to bet YOUR money if its me against a guy that weighs say 175 with the same basic machine.
i weigh what i weigh.am i the best fuck no.but i can get the job done.see ya at the track.

Mark, I just hope before I die I will have the Knowledge and SKill you have! Also you make me proud that at my worst I did not equal you! People come here for SERIOUS Advice and if they want Bull Pucky they go to the Smack House where you may be full time on the Entertainment Committee! !
Smoke, you "May" want to leave at lower rpm and control the Clutch lever a little more! I found that the Higher RPMs at launch will scare you more and leave you less time for control of the lever. I do not "Throw the clutch lever away" but find out about how far I can "Throw" it before I can "Control" the rest of the release! This allows me to have about 4 to 6 inch wheelies and when I shift the the wheel dips and plants or just raises a bit!
Like everything, It takes a while!

Smokehouse- Believe it or not, you performed pretty good for your first time! Many new guys on these big bikes don't even break into the 10's on their first trip to the 1/4.
It's amazing how much you can learn at the track in such a short time, just keep your eyes and ears open and don't be afraid to talk to the fast guys and ask for a little coaching.
Good luck in the future and keep us updated on your progress.

good advice try leaving at different rpm's to see what the bike does and what you are comfortable with it's all about having fun and invest in a leather suit. my buddy fell at over 130 on his zx12 and walked away.

first, ignore the assholes and listen to guys that try to help
going by that pic, you want to be a lot further up on the tank. get real low too, try to have the windscreen eye level, and only a few inches from your visor. it makes a big difference by getting your body weight further forward to help hold down the front of the bike.
