how much clearance?

when having a block bored and replated for 86mm JE pistons, what clearance spec do i want to give Millenium? this motor will be using nitrous, im not sure if that affects this or if it just affects ring end gap....
thx!

Like JC says 3-ish seems to be the upper limit

Based on some expert advice, i aim at .0018-.0020. I have a block at Millennium now getting stripped and re-plated/honed to get to this spec.

Unknowingly, i ran one set at about .0012. Everything was OK until a dyno operator did a pull without fully heat soaking the motor. Seized a piston, slung the rod through everything. 100% fukkered motor.

JE piston spec sheet says .0020.

Have you sent the 86mm pistons to Millennium for reference, along with the JE spec sheet? They will need to know how JE wants their pistons measured so they can set the clearance accurately, or at least within their guaranteed tolerance.

VERY, VERY good point.
make sure Millennium knows exactly what you want them to do. Great folks, Kurt called me this afternoon to confirm what i had written on the transmittal of the block to them. According to him, I am "the guy in Texas who is anal about clearances".

yep, with a lil luck i'll have it back on the dyno doing another cam CL test next weekend. The block at Millennium is being brought to spec for a spare. my spare parts is getting low.

my sheet from JE says .0025 ?? your custom 87mm pistons need to be run tighter? or did they change their spec recently?

If the 86mm and 87mm pistons are from different forging blanks or if the alloy is different, then they may react differently to thermal loads. Or maybe the spec sheet is just different...

"Set clearance to .0025 (.06mm) Some applications may require more clearance. Measure piston diameter .500 (13mm) up from bottom of skirt."
