KZ, you are gettin' after it!!!

Have you pulled the oil pump? if so how does the impeller look?

What about the oil/water pump drive shaft? If you haven't pulled it from the cases yet, don't pull it. If you have pulled it get a new retaining circlip. It MUST be replaced.

you really must pull the rods off the crank to (at least) wash the passages.

Mark each rod as to 1-2-3-4, and mark each cap with front & back and number it to correspond to its rod.

this is kinda important...

I'd change all rod bearings, no matter what they looked like, but that's just me.

I dunno about stock rods/bolts; dumbass, me.

Ya, Pete, I am having FUN!

(sort of)

Just spent two solid days selecting/fitting bearings, measuring pistons to cyl, grinding rings, setting quench, measuring CR, re-shimming all valves, degreeing cams, measuring PTV... Buncha work...

thx Karl!
next time you do all of that, get me a video will ya? help out the beginner :P
what exactly do you do to select/fit bearings? do you use that plastiguage stuff or some other method?
on a side note, i was at the "local" (over an hrs drive) stealership to order some parts yesterday, and all i ended up getting were a couple oil filters. heres why, i had a list made up, and a total price from ron ayers. RA was about $410, local guy about $740. holy fack, ill be trying to order my stuff online!
thx guys!

i get all my stuff thru RA except when i need a "next day" something, then i bite the bullet and have the dealer get it. Mostly i keep all wear parts "in stock".

I briefly used plastigage but quickly grew to hate it.

You have a very good machine shop or high-end motor builder near you?
If so have them measure your rod journals. You will also need a set of rod bearings to mount in yr rods to measure ID. How bad do your rod bearings look? If they are not too bad you can measure the thickness and determine what size they are. You'll need a set of micrometers which repeat to .0001 to get that thickness.

Back to the garage with me. Motor is in the frame, gotta hook stuff up.

theres nothing really around here locally for high end motor builders. theres just not a demand(the closest dyno is a few hrs drive away). theres a couple machine shops, but im not sure how great they are.....
i do have a digital caliper, but i will have to double check as to how precise it goes.
i pulled the rods off, and im glad i did! the bearings arent as bad as the main crank bearings were, but a couple had some scratches. plus some grey shit was flushed out of the oil passages in the crank. definatly good to get rid of that!
the rod bearings were blue just like the other ones. cant i just go new blues here too? (getting an order ready to try RA.com)
thx!

I would say yes you can, but be sure to give engine time to wear any high spot.(heat cycles)
Many builder use the chart in the manual to build, but the best builder check everything!
With a stock crank and stock rods I would bet with the manual, unless you know exactly
what you're doing.

I believe blue bearing are the thickest and there could be benefits to using black if they
fall within range. Some builder even mix colors on the same rod to get the exact clearance.

Easy Off oven cleaner cuts carbon pretty good. Next best think to a bead blaster. Just be careful where you spray the stuff. It'll eat through skin and weak paint.

ok, update time
did some more cleaning up on the combustion chambers. used the easy off, but i will be more careful next time i use it. it took off a lot of carbon, but it discoloured the aluminum(came around with lots of rubbing with a scour pad) and i think it actually might have just barely started to eat into the aluminum or maybe my eyes and mind are just playing tricks on me :P I also used some 800 grit wet sand paper to take away any sharp edges.

gave it a spray of wd40 to keep it from oxidizing in the mean time

next step is to make a valve spring tool (did this on a kz before with a c clamp) so i can get the valves and springs out so i can give everything a clean up, and get it ready for new valve seals. maybe new springs???

Hell, as long as you are in there, send the head to Y2K and have him cut the seats with his secret profile. Best cheap hp you can get. You have time as the weather up there is prob getting cold... Also have him take .005 off yr head.

It MUST be getting cold there cuz here in Houston the temps PLUNGED into the hi 40's and Gov Perry declared a state of emergency. He is sending disaster relief to all Texans. We are each supposed to receive a knitted cap, mittens and scarf from the Sharper Image by tomorrow.
