ZX12 CRANKSHAFT QUESTIONS
Okay guys, got some questions here.
Looks like my crank may or may not need turned. Cost wise, I may be better off to buy a good used 2000 model crank from a friend in an extra motor he has. I have a 2002 model. How much lighter was the 2000 model, and will I see some gains in et. Will it need balanced with my pistons? If so, I will remove the counter balancer. I can have either polished and magnafluxed for about 20 bucks through a friend at a very reputable business here.
If my rods are good, we have to check them too, not really sure what my best option would be.

nox,
if your crank needs to be welded and ground, you may be better off finding a good used one.
With a 2000 crank I don't think you'll see any appreciable difference in ET but who knows.
The crank is balanced by itself. The straight 4 is in "perfect balance" and doesn't need the piston/crank assembly balanced (unlike a v-8)

Thanks for the input Karl, I was hoping you would chime in. Will give me something to think about on my trip to Hattiesburg........, leaving in a few minutes........
Is 500 a fair price, if all I need to do is polish it and have it magnafluxed? And will it work fine with my counterbalancer?
BTW, going to try my best to stick with this diet while eating out all week in MS. I was 156 on the scales when I got out of the shower. My goal is 150 by the time I get to Texas in Nov............ At 6'0 tall, I think that is about all I will get...........
Please, if anyone else has anymore input, I would be glad to hear it.

500 kind of seems like a lot for a polish, give Marine crank a call they are very reasonable. For under 750 you can have a weld-up 4.6mm over stroker. JohnnyCheese has a nice stock crank with some A-Beam Carillos on it.............................but if your outside the States I doubt he would ship it to you.

$500 is WAY too much.
Like Gary says send to Marine.
He'll balance, straighten, magnaflux, and micropolish for WAY under $500.

What should I offer for it?
BTW, Marine said 800 to stroke it.
I think like 150 to flux, and fix one journal, then 50 after that, so I am looking at 250. Might be what I do after all. I will see what I can get that stocker for. Mine does have those two teeth that are a little suspect, and this 2000 is supposed to be clean, have not seen it.
Thanks for all the input guys, if you have anymore, i would be glad to hear it..........

if you are worried about the starter gear teeth, offer yr bud $250 and send it to Marine for checking etc
if you are not worried about the teeth (i wouldn't be), send it to marine for repair.
a brand new crank from ron ayers is $704...

Thanks Karl. I had not checked new price yet. I have a hookup that I can get new parts at Kaw dealer cost. If I went that route, would the 2000 or 2002 be a better choice, and why?

i really don't know which is better the heavier 2002 or the lighter 2000.
I do know that some folks go to the expense of shaving weight off the crank, but i have no experience with it.

Price on a stroker must have gone up a little as when I have done all of mine they were all under 750, except one which I had larger rod journal size added and a couple other things.
Lighter cranks, might be a good topic for the boards?

There should be et from it, it revs quicker........
After we fully check mine, I will make a decision.
I will see what my buddy says about that cost..........
He originally wanted what a core charge was........,

NOX, when I spun a bearing in '06, I bought a brand new OEM crank for $700.00.
I still have the original one, has one bad journal needing re-working.
$150 plus shipping if you want it. I have no need for it.

Hey Nox i have an 02 and got it lightened by APE. The motor seems to rev quicker but i lost a couple of pounds of torque on the dyno. However, in the real world i did notice a slight improvement in acceleration. Also when you let off the throttle from 100% the bike definately slows down quicker.

Thanks.
FYI. .
I just cross referenced parts on Ron Ayers......
Cranks have different part numbers, duh. rod bolts and nuts, same part number....
rods are different from 2000 to 2002 as well, as are piston pins, but pistons them selves, are the same part number......., how can this be.......
Also, crank bearings have a different part number........
How can things interchange from a 2000 crank to a 2002, if bearing numbers are not the same........., this has me worried, that I may just need to get a new 2002 model crank, and be done............

Does the same go for the rods? They have different part numbers as well.......
Price for the 2000 crank is 50 dollars cheaper than the 2002......., lighter crank, = quicker reving motor = quicker et ,

Nox I have a 02 stroker crank by APE and left the weight as is...it should be a bit more tractable on launches and out of corners...and as you said you lose a bit of torque with a lighter job.
A 02 with same spec crank and prelim a/f (race day 1am rebuild) on stock cams was making 126ft/lbs torque 205ish bhp on pump piss.
I'll have some figures on mine in a couple of weeks i'll post'em here if your interested.

You have to look at it this way.........
I leave at 7000, and then my bike never sees anything less than 9500. What is this corner thing you are talking about, I have heard of these........?

Nox,
00-01 cranks have less weight, 02 up weight was added to increase bottom end.
Karl He's not talking about superseeded part numbers the 00 and 02 use different bearings
The place keeper tab is wider on the 00, all zx12 carolli (sp) rods us 00 bearing reguardless of year, because they are the same part number for all years.
I would not use a 00 crank if I had a choice.
Not to start another pissing contest but almost EVERY 2000 zx12 that 'I' know about has blown atleast once. Very few 02 up suffer the same faith.
The 00 crank will fit in the 02 cases without any mods.
KAWI changed (improved) cases in 01, then cranks ,cases and rods in 02.
EVERYTHING is interchangable.
Do you think they were bored?

Well, if I had not hit the stupid button, this thread would not be here........
I think I will probably buy a new 2002 crank and be done.........
I also never blew a clutch basket, even with 1.32 short times, and 5.7 1/8 miles
Broke a chain on the starting line, no basket though........
I think they did improve things.........
Too bad they built a crappy set of tranny gears............( but that s fixed too RND rocks)
