Lock Up Clutch

At what stage of drag racing would one need a multistage lock up clutch on a ZX-12? Is it horsepower dependent? If so, what range would one be needed? What are the pro's and con's of having one?

It's not horsepower dependent...You don't have to be a drag racer to want one...I use mine on the street too...just in case someone wants to try me...(for traction control)..With the right setup you can control your rear tire spin....Multi stage just gives you more tuneability(greatly....)Cons.You have to pay attention to your clutch lever, puller, ect. you don't want to be pulling it in at 100 mph(on a Muzzy's)...MTC has a good package...Single or multi stage...
I've been running lockups for years, street and drag strip..They are good peices ....Plate longevity is longer once you get your setup right...JMO...Others will be along with some more info...

Muzzy is a lot harder on the Pull shafts on the street than the MTC IMHO. The #1 problem for street is you cannot pull in the clutch lever at any real speed like if you saw an Oil Spot and wanted to coast through it!

I use one because of close to 300HP. I also use mine more like a stock clutch with with a locking device for top end as opposed to a slipper clutch with Multi stages of Friction control

Thats exactly what I was worried about before I put a Muzzy in my bike...But mine is setup with a bearing support for the puller shaft that NOX had made for just such an occassion...Plus spring setup is "LIGHT".....and weight on the arms is just right for the top end charge..
If you have never had one , be cautious and ask alot of questions as you are doing....
Do you have a stock motor???

That Bearing is the Main difference between the MC and the Muzzy. If you have the bearing then you are close to the MTC

The bearing support is a Muzzy copy of the MTC set up.........

the other things done are the special things I did........., and the pull rod made of tool steel.

If you soley ride on the street, I would stay away from it.........,

It elimitates the left hand in drag racing, as you pop the clutch like a bar bike when you launch.............., (if you know how to set it up right), Other wise, you hit your back on the track about even with the tree!!!!!!

OK..back to my thread....

NOX, are you saying that with a lock up..there is no more "hit and then slide the clutch"? just full on?

Yep...If you have it setup right you can throw the clutch lever off the line. I had just 4 light clutch springs in mine..... and depending on how your bikes suspension is set up you could end up with as little as just 3 springs in there. The clutch springs, Called static springs in a lock-up, control the launch out to about 15 to 20 feet depending on your gearing. then the arms and weights start taking over and lock up the clutch. the multi-stage adds a set of over ride springs to the arms to delay the lock up further down the track which really helps if you don't have wheelie bars. If you get one you should only change one thing at a time and keep detailed notes...it's easy to lose your setup. I'm sure Nox will chime in here soon. Roy

How difficult are they to setup? Would it be easier to pasy someone to do it or does it take a lot of TnT and little changes

It takes time, but it is worth it...........

Get an MTC, whether you get a single or multi stage........

What they call a single, really has two stages........

I would start with a single stage, they are easy to set up.........

What I use would not work for you anyway.............

No one uses the exact same pressure............

You have to find what works for your set up.

Good luck with it.

I cant wait to get back out, going to try to take mine out on Sat night, and fine tune some more.

Hopefully this DAMN rain will quit.

The reason I was asking is to get a base, as I have read on here and other places. That is the one thing with a lock-up is the difference between 2 bikes and riders. That's why I was asking what your base static pressure was. To see if my base was close to your set up, and if I need to go up or down from where I am at.

If you get the chance, come on over to Thunder Valley and race the PMRA race this Saturday night.

I am testing this Sat, trying to get this thing to run 5.7s in the 1/8 before I put in on thw quarter......

If your set up is not working right, that will tell you what you need to do. I am not really sure why you would need my pressure anyway, if you know what yours is doing wrong, wheelie, bog, wont move, whatever, you change it, and make it better......

Where most folks mess up, is not tuning it to the end, they get it close, and forget it, and then wonder why I go out, and if you did not see me use the lever, you would think I have a full slider..............

Tune the think, go to a test day,and try to make improvements............

If I still had my single stage, I would come to the pmra race, but I gotta get the ;muliti finished........

Besides, you only pay 100 to win in street et.

And we are same wb, same motor, same weight........., and I told him to launch at the same rpm............, and we were exact same gearing.......

Another thing is Dr. Joe, gear ratio plays a huge deal, if I change sprockets, I change static. I have a lower first gear than stock, so what worked last year, about flipped me over this year...........

Also, the muzzy hat, and mtc hat, have different installed spring heights.........., about 1mm

Thanks for the input, like I said just looking to see what someone else is running.

Also the 9.50 class pays $400.00 to win, though that might get you there.

Once again, thanks for the input.
