A friend of mine ( Performance eng. ) sell clutches that start out in funny bikes and we have been puitting them in street bikes for the past couple of years. they are thicker than stock fibers and wear way better than stock stuff. I installed mine last year at the end of June and ran them all year, 200+ passes and was still getting 1.50 or better 60' times with them.

Also your saying that the middle clutches are wearing out faster than the others, this is due to oiling issues, AKA lack of oil. When my ZX12 went theu it's 2nd set of clutches in a month, I knew that I had to due something. That's when I drilled out the clutch puller shaft and increased the oil flow. Used the same set of clutches for 2 years on a slick and bar bike and when I sold the bike after being put back to street still had the same clutches in it.

I am working on getting more oil to the clutches now, I will let you know how it works out.

Doc.

Interesting stuff. I'm running 'Busa frictions right now because they have larger contact patches and seem to hold up better given my ham-fisted clutch skills. How do I get in touch with Performance eng to try some of these frictions out?

I also look forward to hearing more about how you are getting more oil in there. I recently chamfered the clutch hat to try and get more oil in, but that does little for the middle of the stack.

aaahhhh, little tricks of the trade i guess.
alright then i got a few more "stupid novice" questions for yous.

How long should I burn out for?
what rpm is probably best to launch at?
any other things that might help me make some jaw dropping e/t's???

Burnout should be long enough to clean and heat the tire. (we have sand to deal with in FL so the cleaning part is important also) Some tires respond differently, but I like to really heat up the tire on the first run of the night and then dial back for subsequent burnouts. Roll your bike side to side to save middle rubber and get a wide contact patch. A dry hop will help you to see what your dealing with before you stage. Avoid lining up on bald spots. Look for bald spots on the track out ahead of you as well. I line up on the right groove as cars weight the right wheel and leave more rubber there, but I'll switch if it is not working for some reason.

For launch I totally agree with Ninjaboy that you have to find what fits you. Smokin' worked with me to try and implement his launch technique but I got slower. Right now I launch at 6,000, but I also needed to gear the bike around how my brain works before I was able to drop into the 1.4s.

Finally, get into your tuck early it really helps. (also advice given to me from Smokin')

Hey Burnout,

Call Curt @ 316-258-9389 tell him that you heard it from me (doc/Joe) about the clutches. Call in the afternoon after 4:00pm.

I am working on the problem now, once I get it working I will let you know what to do to fix the oiling problem. I have a lock-up clutch, so I am working on 2 different things at once. but I have a feeling that there more related than meets the eye.

When I was having problems with my ZX12, it was people on this board that help me figure some things out and fix my problem. So I have no problem sharing info. I really don't see what the big deal is... Most of the people on here will not race each other in most cases and if they do, who cares... It racing...

Thanks Doc, I'll give Curt a call. Looking forward to hearing more on your oiling mods. Can't agree more on how helpful members on this site are.

Ok,

Did oil mod #1 drilled out inter hub, with 15 extra #40 drill bit holes arond the hub. In a 6 star pattern and drilling 3 holes then 2 holes.

oil mod #2 drill #24 holes in the inter hub webs, these are inbetween the spring holders. I drilled (3) holes in each web staggered 2 on 1 side and 1 on the other side.

Will look something like this. 0 0 in betweeb the spring holders.
0

Oil mod #3 mod the clutch pusher shaft, I had a friend take the shaft and mill (3) .010 flat spot on the shaft. This allows more oil to get to the plates.

I have to take the clutches out one night this week, I will try and get some pictures and measurements for ya.

Doc.

BTW; If your using a lock-up clutch, 26# springs are to soft for a 185# rider... Will get some 30# springs in this week and keep you posted.
