rod bearings: check em once, check em twice...

This am i was measuring up a new set of rod & main bearings bearings, prep for assembling the motor this weekend.

No changes to crank or cases or rods, so why measure?? Why not just buy new rod & main bearings, put em in??

I was tempted to take the easy road, but outa habit, I started measuring anyway.

The mains were within a 10th of what i was replacing, great

But one of the rods was .0016 when it should have been .0026.

Huh????

After a bunch of fiddling around, i replaced that brand new brown bearing with another brand new brown bearing and walla, .0027.

So... The brand new, in the package, "brown" bearing was WAY outa spec.

Who'd a thunk it????

Did you measure the individual bearing shells or did you measure the rods/bearings assembled?

i measured the assembly.

I was tempted to use yr method of measuring the shells, but ended up doing it the old fashioned way. Basically because the battery in my 0-1" mic was dead, and i was too lazy to got get another one.

I will measure the defective shell(s), and see what the difference is when i get a new battery.

This build is going together slowly. Block was re-surfaced by millennium so quench had to be re-set.

And, #3 cyl has .003-.004" less quench than the other 3. grrr... Long rod...
Pisses me off because i sent that "set" to Carrillo to be reconditioned; it had 3 rods from one set, one from another. I thought they would size & match them, weight and dimensions. Guess not, eh?
