180 vs 190 Shinko

aside from being lighter, I read on another site that the contact patch for the 180 was larger than the 190. This seems counterintuitive, can anyone confirm? Sounds like a win win if true.

On a 6" rim the 190 has a wider contact patch, but not by a whole lot.

Yeah me too, I'm not a member of the other site so I couldn't inquire further but here is the text. I guess it was air pressure, rim differences or wear pattern.

That Shinko is getting the job done for sure. We measured the contact of my 180 yesterday compared to a 190 that was on a Busa and mine was 1/2" more contact patch than his."

I always ran a 180. I figured the rim would stretch the 180 out more than a 190, theoretically flattening it in the process, ie: making the contact patch larger. Plus it was a little lighter and less expensive.

I broke out my tape measure last night at the track and checked a few bikes. All running 6" rims and Shinko u-softs. The 190's have about 5.5" of contact while the 180's have 5" of contact. If your not having traction problems, go with the lighter 180. I'm running a 190 right now but mainly because I like the looks of a fatter tire on the back.

I had always run the 190 on my old ZX-12R, basically with no problems.
When I got my ZX-14, I pm'd a few people, including Ricky Gadson, about which gets more contact, and they all said the 180, so I tried it.
I admit, the first few passes I would have to lower the pressure to 8 psi, but as the tire got worn in, I was able to go all the way up to 16-18 psi. Then it lasted 200 passes, which I have never been able to do before.
Like someone quoted me earlier, I did measure my 180 on the ZX-14 rim against the 190 on a BUSA rim and I had 1/2 inch more contact.
My bike is sitting at 69" and the 180 is doing its job, PERIOD!!!

I really don't think the 180 is lighter. I think I recall where the 180 was actually a little heavier.
Let's not forget, the 180 is a 55 profile, whereas the 190 is a 50 profile.
It's all about what the rider wants. If you want a fatter look, get the 190. They both hook great regardless of anything else.

It should be stamped U-Soft on the sidewall. The pattern is the same as the STD 003.

I was told that running the 180 will help mph also more than the 190.
Any truth to that?

I heard the 180 is a lighter tire as well. I am running a 200 right now but will be going down to a 190. or maybe even a 180 ASAP!

Only if it's a lighter tire or if the overall diameter is slightly different from one to another. That would change you final gearing some. Since you on a ZX14, the rear wheel weighs nearly 40lbs. Cut some of that spinning weight off and your MPH will increase.
