"people" I guess that would be you and I Teddy... and BG you still did not answer my question? that is how a discussion works, I am discussing. and if you would never bring an R1 to the track why the hell would you even ask the question?
I have brought one to the track and I have won a few thousand dollars with it... so In my opinion it is a good drag bike... tough to ride on a stock wheelbase like I do, but I have had fun racing it.

MM, do you have a lot of problems with the clutch? I know there are mods for some years to help but from what I hear that is still the weak link. There, I'm discussing.

98 R1 was a nice bike and fairly quick.
Much harder to launch than any other bike I've rode.
If you extend it, it would probably do well.

I've never raced on an R1 but I have ridden one quite a few times and know for a fact that they have very strong engines. I have no doubts that I could take an R1, set it up for drag racing and lay down some solid/consistant ET numbers with it. In a bracket race, consistancy is all that matters anyway. Catch a good light, run your number and take home the money. Easy as that!

However, I will say that I have raced against a few R1's on my 2000 ZX12R (set up for drag racing) and have had no problem beating them. But... it all depends on who is on the bike. I got beat by a GSX-R 1000 one night. (SUPERDAVE) Just barely but I still lost!!! He was the better racer on that pass. That's racing for ya.

OK anyboody can set-up any bike and run consistant numbers. Hell I can take a power wheel and run consistant 45 sec passes. That does not mean the bike is a runner. The way I look at it is that bikes are made for certain things and R1 and drag racing are not family members. Now, anybody can do anything with enough money like the velocity racing twin turbo R1 but for the average joe, the R1 just does not get the job done. Now put it on the ciruit track and it's a new ball game!

I agree. Yamaha and drag racing don't mix but... the R1 has the power to compete it just needs the right set up. We all take our bikes and set them up to run better on the drag strip. Without doing anything to the motor, my ZX12 is almost a full second faster with the mods. Why is the R1 any different. Take two good racers, a "set up" R1 with a simular "set up" GSX-R1000 and it will be a close race. I guarantee it. But the fact remains... hardly anybody drags Yamaha or Honda. The drag strips most definately belong to Kawasaki and Suzuki. Come to think of it, they pretty much run the show in the AMA as well. (With exception to Hayden and Rossi)

This is so true man! My boy is in love with R1s. He has been 6.4 on motor but everytime he hits the nitrous, He burns the clutches up. I mean he burns them in one pass. OK so try to go a night on motor. Now he gets 3 passes! True story! found out that he shot the clutch basket. Also happened to my boy with the 06 R1. Now he has an 07 that he is building. We'll see where that goes!

Nobody is saying that the R1's can't run. The problem is they have little baby clutches and can't handle the power. So either you spend boocoo bucks on clutch mods to try and make it better and still go through a lot of clutches or you buy a ZX10 and have little to no problems.
