white smoke again
With only 12 passes on the bike,it started smoking white again. My head I just had milled .003 and the cylinder was found true.I'm running just water and water wetter. When I got home, the bike stopped smoking.Other than a warped head, what else would cause the water to get by?

Were ya on the juice? That happened to my bro's Busa, the juice had ate a little hole in the side of the piston and rings. The oil would get burned and white smoke would come out.
Hope it's not that bad for ya though.

That sucks, you might be able to rent it out as a high dollar fog machine. Just kidding ya, hope it's not the head gasket. Wonder what the plugs look like?

Head gaskets can blow without a warped head.
If you have to go into that engine again, Use coppercoat spray on the head gasket.
I know in a perfect work you should not, BUT when the world is not perfect coppercoat works. Spary both sides and let it dry to a tacky feel before you install head.

If you can smell the water wetter its got a coolant leak inside the motor, head gasket, head bolt...not good news

I just talked with my brother who suggested use a coolant leak dye so that when I do an exploratory,I'll know where the leak travel was.Has anyone had any luck using this product?
I used the copper gasket spray on the last gasket and it did the exact same thing its doing now.
Has anyone ever loosened and then retorqued a leaky gasket with any success?

Wish I could tell ya, re-torqing the head would work..... but dont think so, do compression check?? maybe seping through cylinder wall.... and or, when you have the head off, check block & head w/straight edge... Good luck, hope you figure it out!!!

Pete, was that head gasket new?
Do you see any leaks externally?
Are you getting any bubbles in the coolant overflow tank?
Did Bill check the top of the block for flatness?

That was a brand new gasket.Nothing external but I have seen the fluid level drop.Bill checked the cylinder and said it was good.I'm wondering if this was why my cylinder pressure was low.I just got some coolant leak detector dye and was going to put it in tonite.I was hoping to have the bike hold up on Wed.and see if there were any openings left for MIR.

I hear ya Brooklynnyzx12r, I just dread the thought of traveling any distance only to see it blow smoke after the first run.I also just got my nitrous valves,so I'm nervous about thermal shock..I just want to do it right so not to compound the problem.I'm hoping that there was a scratch on the gasket from installation thats causing it to leak.Running out of time for my license.

Its possable those studs dont stretch enough. The head bolts NEED to stretch to keep proper clamping tension on the head gasket. Those studs were quite thick and didnt have any reduced shank anywhere to allow for bolt stretch. Using the stock torque spec for those studs might not me enough torque to stretch the bolts.
Pete, I think you need to crank them down another 10-15 ft lbs more torque to get them to stretch enough for good hot and cold clamping force.

I'm about ready to tilt the motor down to pull the head.I'm going to do a few errands and will start on it when I get back. Are you saying I should just retorque the bolts or would you recommend pulling the head?I have a feeling that dye shit isn't going to show anything

Not to jack this thread,
But I really value what Y2k and johnnycheese has to say about engines.
When you say add another 10-15 ft lbs to a torque value I question the value
of a snap-on or other high dollar torque wrench over a $50 craftman.
I've done comparisons with some big name stuff and some budget wenches
and it is usually only 1-2 ft lbs difference at 50 ft lbs. Are these 1-2 critical?
Sorry pete, maybe you can use this info too.

Not a problem to learn something new!By the way,I torqued the head to spec plus one flat last time.I will be borrowing my brothers new digital snap-on to torque again.

#2 piston missing some metal from the inlet valve relief to the wall.It also looks like the pistons were leaking in between the cylinders on all 3 walls.

You had visible leakage between all the cylinders?

I think its leakage. There's a 1/4" black stain between all the cylinders.I have to pull apart the valves on that cylinder to look for damage. The rings are ok,no marks on the cylinder,so it had to have gone out the exhaust.Where can I get another gasket?I believe its a 87mm.Would any machine shop be able to bore it out for me?
My next problem is finding out why it burnt the piston.I haven't even sprayed the dry shot yet.

A bad injector maybe? Leaned out.
Only thing I can think of that would melt
one piston without spray.
