Those clips were put in by the original builder. I didn't witness them being put in but due to the reputation of the builder, I trust that they were new. I don't want to point a finger of blame at anyone, as I think this was just a misfortunate thing that happens occasionally in the sport of racing.

I've only ever seen clips fail for 1 of 2 reasons.
used clips-- big no no. They loose tension.
clip positioned improperly, causing clip to compress at end of stroke, and allowing it to come loose.

I'm sure many here already knew this, but some may not have....
so I'd thought i'd share info ............

never allow the c clip end to align with the c clip cut out in the piston.
Once installed turn the clip in the groove so the ends of the clip are opposite the c clip installation cut out in the piston.
.

I have not built alot of street bike engines, but many many 2 stroke mx engines.... used to race mx.
Top ends every second race weekend!

Sorry to hear about the loss.
That would truly suck. Expensive $$$$$$$$$$

Around these parts, youd be waiting for months just for parts.
and I'd be screaming mad!

Howdy Entropy and Buddy Missed you all at the ShootOut. ...............But ya
did not miss much as only a couple preliminary runs went through before a
nasty storm blew in. It hammered and twisted a bunch of people's canopys,
also had about 30-40 people cowering in the mens and womens rest rooms.
My son and I made it to 9SecondJens and her Dad's enclosed bike trailer before
it realy let loose. I put my boy in with their Dog and we held their canopy from
collapsing on the Bikes. When it was all said and done their canopy was bent
and a few of the metal supports snapped, but the bikes were OK. The Funny
thing is I checked the radar before leaving the house and everything seemed
fine, just a few scattered showers here and there. Talked to the wife after ward
and she looked on the radar and said a nice pink spot just went through the area
we were in. You all must be psychic for not showing up. How is the Motor coming
along?

Gary,
My weather forecast said storms and it was looking real bad in Houston so i bagged it.

Did JohnnyCheese show?? George??

We have 2 motors cooking, my spare and Buddy's rebuild; both are advancing quickly. Cases are modded for strokers w/Carrillo's, etc, etc, etc. Both trans should be back by end week and the cranks by earliest next week. Stuff coming from everywhere Hopefully both will be done in a couple weeks.

How is yr project coming?

George was in line to run in the 9.5 class when it let loose. He shot his bike into his friends trailer just in the nick of time. His friends left thier bikes out under the canopy thinking it'll pass. Old George said he was peeking out of the trailer like a drowned rat. He said them hairdryer boys had thier dump pipes swilling up a bunch of water. I thought we were going to visit the Wizard of Oz when all the Canopys were shooting around. JC must have been getting psychic vibes from you all and held off after watching some stuff sprouting up on the radar. I'll be swinging by his place on Sunday if his schedule permits, might do a little plasti -gauge action and hopfully slip the block on the pistons.
